We are seeking a highly skilled Network Security Engineer to join a high performing Cyber Security team. This role is responsible for designing, implementing, maintaining, and enhancing the organisation's network security capabilities across enterprise, cloud, and hybrid environments. The successful candidate will play a key role in protecting critical business systems and data by ensuring network infrastructure remains secure, resilient, and aligned with industry best practices. Location: Melbourne Hybrid working: 3 days in the office Day rate: CIRCA $1,000 per day This is an initial contract role with the genuine potential to go permanent Network Security Architecture Strong expertise in Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA/ZTNA), including identity-based access controls, micro-segmentation, least-privilege access, and defence-in-depth security principles. Advanced knowledge of network segmentation across Layer 3-7 environments, including micro-segmentation and software-defined networking (SD-WAN) architectures. Proven ability to design secure, scalable network architectures across enterprise, cloud, and hybrid environments. Experience designing and securing hybrid cloud architectures, including hub-and-spoke, transit gateway, and secure ingress/egress models. Firewall & Perimeter Security Deep expertise in Next Generation Firewall (NGFW) technologies, preferably Palo Alto Networks, including architecture, deployment, policy design, optimisation, and governance. Strong experience managing firewall policy lifecycles, including rule reviews, audits, recertification, normalisation, and compliance management. Hands-on experience implementing and managing web filtering, URL filtering, and TLS/SSL inspection to enhance visibility of encrypted traffic. Proven experience managing Web Application Firewalls (WAF), including OWASP Top 10 protection, bot mitigation, threat prevention, and rule tuning. Cloud Network Security Hands-on experience securing multi-cloud environments across AWS and Azure. Strong knowledge of cloud-native security controls, including Azure Firewall, AWS Network Firewall, AWS WAF, AWS Shield, Security Groups, and Network Security Groups. Experience implementing network security controls for cloud migration and cloud transformation initiatives. Security Operations & Monitoring Expertise in network traffic analysis, packet inspection, log analysis, and identifying anomalous or malicious activity. Strong understanding of security monitoring, logging, and SIEM integration across network, cloud, and hybrid environments. Experience supporting network security incident investigations, threat detection, and response activities. Familiarity with SOAR platforms and security automation workflows. Automation & Engineering Proficiency in scripting and automation using technologies such as Python and PowerShell. Experience implementing Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform, ARM Templates, or AWS CloudFormation. Ability to automate security controls, firewall management, compliance reporting, and operational processes. Governance & Risk Experience managing Shadow IT and SaaS security risks, including application discovery, assessment, and control implementation. Strong understanding of security frameworks and best practices, including Zero Trust, NIST, CIS Controls, Essential Eight, and cloud security principles.
