Working within the Backfill Engineering Division, this role owns the full backfill cycle, from backfill materials, mix design and fill planning through to execution, quality control, and continuous improvement. The Backfill Engineer works closely with mine planning, operations, and ground control teams to ensure backfill is delivered safely, on schedule, and to specification. This is a hands-on technical role requiring strong communication skills and the ability to drive performance and safety outcomes in a dynamic underground environment. Key Tasks: Develop fill plans including exposure sequences, inrush exclusion zones, and pour instructions, and communicate these to the operational team to guide safe and efficient execution. Prepare work instructions for backfill-related activities, including reticulation and barricade plans, to ensure pre-fill works are completed in a timely manner. Manage mix design and fill recipe development, maintaining and updating fill recipes in response to QAQC results and operational feedback. Perform and track routine QAQC of backfill materials and manage the associated database, providing reliable inputs to engineering and operational decision-making. Troubleshoot backfill-related issues with underground operators. Monitor and report daily backfill production and system downtime, tracking key performance indicators against targets. Develop and maintain the weekly and three-month backfill schedules, integrating with the broader mine plan to align fill delivery with stope sequencing requirements. Lead safety compliance through site inspections, procedure reviews, and task observations. Chair regular backfill meetings to review performance, address safety issues, identify bottlenecks, and drive corrective action plans. Identify and lead improvement projects and initiatives to optimise backfill system performance, reliability, and cost efficiency. Key Requirements: A degree in Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related discipline. Between 2 and 8 years of experience in underground mining operations, with a minimum of 2 years in a dedicated backfill engineering role. Demonstrated hands-on experience with paste fill systems. Strong understanding of stope sequencing, exposure design, and fill planning principles. Proven ability to troubleshoot paste plant and reticulation system issues in a fast-paced environment. Solid communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage with operators, supervisors, and technical stakeholders. A proactive approach to safety with experience leading inspections, procedure reviews, and task observations. Eligibility to work in Australia and willingness to work on a site roster if required.
