We are seeking a motivated Civil Litigation Lawyer, ideally with 2years PAE, to play a key role in supporting our Senior Associate within the firm’s growing civil practice. This role is ideal for a lawyer looking to further develop their civil litigation practice in intentional torts, police accountability matters, negligence claims and matters intersecting with criminal proceedings, while taking on greater responsibility and autonomy. About the Role Working closely with our Senior Associate, you will play an active role in the carriage and progression of complex civil litigation matters delivering high-quality, representation in cases involving unlawful arrest, police misconduct, misuse of police powers, assault, battery, false imprisonment, malicious prosecution, and other civil claims, especially those that intersect with criminal proceedings. Your practice will span multiple jurisdictions including NSW, the ACT and WA. You will also collaborate with our criminal defence team to identify and advance civil claims arising from their matters. Day to day you will: Manage and assist with intentional tort and civil claims from intake through to resolution. Prepare high-quality written material including statements of claims, pleadings, submissions and briefs. Appear at directions hearings, mediations, interlocutory applications and settlement conferences. Brief counsel for defended hearings and trials. Conduct legal research, assist in developing litigation strategy and provide advice to clients and internal stakeholders. Collaborate with our criminal defence team to identify and support civil claims that arise from ongoing criminal matters. Maintain organised file management and contribute to internal systems and processes. About you We are looking for a capable and motivated litigation lawyer who is confident managing aspects of civil litigation matters and keen to continue developing their advocacy and litigation skills, particularly in intentional tort claims and police accountability matters. You will bring: 2 years PAE , with solid exposure to civil litigation or intentional tort claims. Experience managing files or significant aspects of litigation matters with supervision. Confidence appearing in procedural and interlocutory hearings. Experience briefing counsel in defended hearings/trials. Strong drafting and client management skills. An interest in police accountability and plaintiff-side advocacy. The ability to work with a degree of autonomy while collaborating closely within a team. The role will be based out of our Canberra office however for the appropriate candidate can be based out of our Sydney office.
