Job Title Research Officer Job Description An exciting opportunity is available for a Research Officer to join the Davidson Laboratory in the Blood Cells and Blood Cancer Division at Australia’s pre-eminent biomedical research institute. About the Position The role of the Research Officer is to develop and apply data analysis techniques to high-throughput sequencing data. The appointee will contribute to collaborative projects to advance our understanding and treatment of human diseases. The position involves undertaking research with minimal supervision and providing advice and mentoring to other staff and students within the group. The Davidson Laboratory use computer science and mathematics to analyse complex gene sequencing data, to reveal new insights into disease. The transcriptome, which is the molecular readout of the genome, can be altered in disease. A focus of our research is developing novel bioinformatics methods to identify changes to the transcriptome in cancer, using data generated by contemporary and emerging transcriptome sequencing technologies, such as long-read and single-cell platforms. We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with the ability to develop creative new algorithms and methods for data analysis. Selection Criteria A doctoral qualification or equivalent in a relevant quantitative discipline such as computational biology, statistics, mathematics, computer science or physics An excellent academic record and research experience that has resulted in publications, conference presentations or the equivalent such as a PhD thesis. Experience analysing large and/or complex datasets. Has demonstrated an ability to independently solve challenging problems through creativity and lateral thinking. Experience undertaking bioinformatics research, or a demonstrated interest in bioinformatics or genomics. Good computational skills including proficiency in one or more programming languages, familiarity with Linux or Unix, Git and working in a high-performance computing environment. Proven interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively. A willingness to supervisor early-career group members and contribute to the organisation of the research group as required. Terms of Appointment This position is available for two years in a full or part-time capacity. Salary is Research Employee Level A6-8 ($107,194 - $115,059).
