At the beginning of each shift, volunteers check in with the Ward Clerk or Nurse in Charge to receive orientation, updates, and any specific instructions for the day. Throughout the shift, volunteers engage with patients and families through friendly, empathetic conversation, offering a reassuring presence and taking time to listen. While volunteers do not provide medical advice or personal opinions, they play an important role in offering emotional comfort and helping patients and families feel heard and supported. Volunteers assist with patient comfort by offering refreshments such as tea, coffee, morning or afternoon tea, and approved sandwiches, ensuring dietary requirements and ward guidelines are followed. They may also offer blankets or approved comfort items upon request, in consultation with nursing staff. Where appropriate, volunteers help communicate non-medical requests or concerns to clinical staff, such as room temperature, meal preferences, or general comfort needs, helping patients feel supported without interrupting clinical workflows. During quieter periods, Day Oncology Support Volunteers may assist with small administrative and organisational tasks that support the smooth running of the ward. These may include assembling patient welcome or information packs, restocking brochures in public areas, assisting with stocktake or organisation of approved non-clinical supplies, and reordering refreshments according to ward schedules and guidelines. Through kindness, reliability, and respectful communication, Oncology Support Volunteers make a meaningful contribution to the overall experience of patients, families, and staff within the oncology ward.
