The Role: We are seeking a veterinary nurse to join our Internal Medicine Referral Department, working alongside our Internal Medicine Specialist to support a wide variety of complex referral cases. This role will primarily involve day shifts aligned with the Internal Medicine service, while continuing to contribute to the Emergency and Critical Care roster. The position offers flexibility and opportunities to rotate and train within a specialised referral environment while continuing to expand your ECC nursing skills. This position is ideal for nurses with a strong interest in internal medicine who are eager to develop advanced referral nursing skills within a fast-paced multidisciplinary hospital environment. Your Duties & Responsibilities: Provide advanced nursing care and monitoring for complex medical and referral patients Assist the Internal Medicine Specialist with consultations, diagnostics, and treatment procedures Perform advanced technical nursing procedures including catheter placement, blood collection, sample preparation, medication administration, and transfusion monitoring Assist with advanced diagnostic procedures including ultrasound, endoscopy, imaging, aspirates, biopsies, and laboratory sample collection Prepare patients and equipment for internal medicine procedures and diagnostics Monitor and care for hospitalised referral patients, including intensive nursing care, fluid therapy management, nutritional support, and patient comfort Assist with anaesthesia monitoring and recovery for internal medicine procedures where required Maintain accurate and detailed medical records and treatment sheets in line with hospital protocols Work collaboratively with emergency, ICU, and referral teams to support integrated patient care Communicate professionally and compassionately with clients and referring veterinarians regarding patient admissions, updates, and discharge care Assist with maintaining clinical areas, specialist equipment, and inventory in accordance with infection control and safety standards Participate in continuing education, case discussions, and referral nursing training opportunities Your Skills & Experience: The successful applicant will demonstrate: Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing or equivalent recognised qualification Current membership with the Veterinary Nurses Council of Australia (VNCA) or similar professional organisation is desirable Demonstrated interest in Internal Medicine and referral nursing Previous experience in referral, ECC, or specialist nursing is desirable Strong organisational skills and attention to detail Excellent time management skills and the ability to prioritise effectively in a fast-paced environment Strong communication and collaboration skills when working with multidisciplinary referral teams, referring veterinarians, and clients Ability to work independently while remaining adaptable and team-focused A genuine passion for delivering the highest standards of patient care and client service Flexibility to transition smoothly into Emergency and Critical Care shifts and assist with overtime when required Desirable Experience: Diploma or higher qualification in Veterinary Nursing with a focus on Internal Medicine or Emergency and Critical Care Experience using SpecVet and or Smartflow Interest in advanced diagnostics, complex medical case management, and patient advocacy AREC can offer: On the job training within a specialist referral environment Opportunities for skill development across Internal Medicine, Emergency and Critical Care Continuing Education Allowance and access to employer-funded benefits including memberships and registrations to professional organisations for eligible employees Competitive remuneration Paid attendance at compulsory staff meetings An engaged and committed leadership team that encourages growth and recognises positive contributions and feedback from the team Employee Assistance Program and Wellness Committee A modern workplace with in-house pathology and advanced imaging Contact: Sally Groen – How to Apply: If you are keen to be a part of a highly compassionate and hard-working team of healthcare professionals, we would love to hear from you.
