13th May, 2026 About the Role An exciting opportunity is available for an experienced Senior Solicitor to join a high-performing in-house legal team supporting major government budget, policy and legislative initiatives. Pay Rate: $71 – $80 per hour super Start Date: ASAP Contract Length: 3-month contract from commencement End Date: 24 August 2026 Location: 52 Martin Place, Sydney NSW - 7hrs/day M-F Working Arrangement: Hybrid model – onsite Tuesdays & Thursdays The successful candidate will work within the Budget, Finance, Economic & Policy (BFEP) branch of the Office of General Counsel, providing expert legal advice, practical support and matter management across a broad range of legal and legislative matters. This role will primarily support: Policy & Budget functions Economic Strategy & Productivity functions across a diverse range of economic, public and commercial policy areas. About the Team The legal team forms part of a broader Office of General Counsel that includes legal, governance, integrity and risk functions. The successful candidate will join a collaborative team of six lawyers working on complex and high-impact government matters. The team advises on: Public finance and governance Taxation and revenue reform Economic and competition policy Regulatory frameworks Administrative and constitutional law Legislative reform and drafting Cabinet and statutory decision-making processes Key Responsibilities Provide legal advice on: Public finance and government decision-making Taxation and revenue policy initiatives Administrative and constitutional law matters Statutory interpretation Economic and regulatory policy Support legislative reform projects, including: Legislative drafting support Bill development Liaison with Parliamentary Counsel’s Office Review and advise on: Cabinet submissions Regulations and statutory instruments Governance and policy documents Assist with budget-related legal matters and associated legislation Provide legal support on commercial arrangements, consultancy engagements and confidentiality matters Manage responsive, fast-paced advisory work across internal stakeholders About You The ideal candidate will demonstrate: Current Australian practising certificate Experience within government, regulatory or in-house legal environments Strong understanding of: Public law Administrative law Statutory interpretation Government processes Strong drafting, advisory and stakeholder engagement skills Ability to work autonomously and manage competing priorities Confidence working in a fast-paced environment with evolving priorities Candidates from private practice or private sector in-house environments with strong public law capability are also encouraged to apply.
