Join our Downer Professional Services team and play a key role in delivering complex defence and national security projects that safeguard Australia’s future. Downer Professional Services comprises of three business units our Technical, Advisory, and Capability consulting practice, and Team Downer, which partners with CASG and NSSG as a major service provider to Defence. Together, we are a multi-disciplinary advisory and delivery partner of choice for clients across Defence and National Security. We currently have an opportunity for a Deputy Integrated Project Manager in Canberra to work on Joint projects. What You’ll Do This role offers a broad scope, with key role responsibilities including: Lead project delivery — manage the JP9101 Project Management and Support Team to deliver outcomes within approved scope, schedule, cost and risk tolerances. Provide senior project advice — brief the IPM on performance, risks, issues and opportunities, and act as the IPM when required to ensure continuity of leadership. Oversee integration and governance — ensure acquisition, transition and sustainment activities align with SHFC Program frameworks, ASDEFCON requirements and CASG QMS. Manage project artefacts and performance — oversee plans, schedules, risk registers, cost models, EVM data and reporting for governance bodies and senior Defence stakeholders. Lead stakeholder engagement and team development — coordinate with industry partners and IPTs, resolve delivery issues, mentor staff and promote continuous improvement across the project team. What You’ll Bring Defence project management expertise — demonstrated experience leading complex Defence acquisition projects or programs, with strong competence in planning, scheduling, risk management and disciplined baseline control. Leadership of multidisciplinary teams — proven ability to guide, mentor and coordinate diverse project teams while maintaining structured project management frameworks and high performance standards. Strong Defence governance and contracting knowledge — deep understanding of CASG governance, ASDEFCON frameworks, Defence capability development processes and compliance with legislative and policy requirements. High‑level communication and stakeholder influence — excellent written and verbal communication skills, including preparing briefs for senior Defence leaders and influencing stakeholders to resolve competing priorities. Professional qualifications and ethical behaviours — tertiary qualifications at AQF 7/8/9 (preferably AQF 9) in project management or related fields, combined with ethical conduct, stewardship of Commonwealth resources, transparency, collaboration and adherence to PGPA, APS and Defence values. Due to the nature of the work, you are required to currently hold and maintain an AGSVA Security clearance as required by the Commonwealth. In some instances, compliance with International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) requirements may also be an inherent requirement.
