We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Concept / Mechanical Engineer to join our Infrastructure Delivery team on a full-time, permanent basis. Reporting to the Manager Development Engineering, you will play a key role in shaping the early-stage (FEL1/FEL2) development of APA’s gas infrastructure projects in a front-end, concept-focused capacity. This is not a traditional detailed engineering role. Success in this position comes from your ability to work in ambiguity, generate and test ideas, and define practical, fit-for-purpose engineering solutions before they progress into delivery. You will develop and assess high-level gas transmission infrastructure and pipeline concepts, screen technical options, and establish the foundations for major infrastructure decisions, ensuring solutions are safe, viable and aligned to business objectives. The location for this role is Brisbane or Melbourne, with flexible and hybrid working options. Key Responsibilities Lead development of concept and feasibility solutions (FEL1/FEL2) for gas infrastructure projects (pipelines, compression, storage) Translate customer requirements and business constraints into practical, high-level engineering concepts Rapidly generate multiple solution concepts, systematically evaluate them, and converge on the most viable pathway through stage-gate approvals Conduct concept-level assessments and trade studies to inform key project and investment decisions Deliver clear, concise front-end reports outlining options, risks and recommendations Collaborate across disciplines to solve complex, early-stage engineering challenges and support project shaping Your background Background in oil & gas / energy, with exposure to concept, feasibility or FEED work Proven ability to operate effectively in high ambiguity environments where information is incomplete, using engineering judgement to progress decisions Strong skills in optioneering, problem solving and technical decision-making Hands-on mindset – a doer who actively contributes, not just reviews Ability to think laterally, challenge assumptions, and explore innovative solutions Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to clearly articulate ideas and recommendations Desirable: Experience in gas pipeline transmission systems About the Team The Concept Engineering & Research team is a specialised group that shapes the earliest stages of APA’s major infrastructure projects.
