Role purpose We’re looking for a Principal Engineer who thrives at the intersection of technical excellence, people leadership, and strategic influence. This is a hands‑on lead engineering role for someone who wants to design and deliver complex, scalable systems while leading high‑performing engineers and shaping the engineering craft across the organisation. You’ll act as a trusted technical authority within your domain—setting direction, making design decisions, and mentoring engineers—while remaining deeply involved in overall solution design and development. What You’ll Do Lea d and Grow Engineering Talent Lea d , mentor, and develop a team of engineers, building a culture of trust, accountability, and continuous improvement Own the full performance and development lifecycle, including regular 1:1s, development conversations, and coaching Proactively manage performance, wellbeing, compliance, and safety across the team Build your own lea d ership capability while supporting others to do the same Set Technical Direction Define, own, and continuously evolve the technology stack within your domain Establish and champion engineering standards, best practices, and patterns Align technical strategy with broader organisational goals and platform roadmaps Act as a trusted advisor on complex technical and arc hitec tural decisions Communicate technical strategy confidently to both technical and non ‑ technical stakeholders Build and Deliver Great Software Design and deliver secure, scalable, and reliable systems Stay hands ‑ on —contributing directly to codebases where it matters most Lea d sol ution de sign , perform critical code and design reviews, and raise the bar for quality Troubleshoot and re sol ve complex technical challenges Champion Engineering Craft Foster strong collaboration with Product, Arc hitec ture , Platform and Data partners Drive continuous improvement through modern engineering practices (Agile, DevOps, CI/CD, automation) Champion innovation and identify opportunities to optimise systems and processes Build and support our communities of practice to share knowledge and uplift engineering capability What You Bring Exp e r ience 10 years’ exp e r ience in software, systems, or platform engineering with deep hands ‑ on delivery Proven lea d ership exp e r ience mentoring and guiding engineering teams Strong exp e r ience designing and building scalable, secure systems Exp e r ience with cloud platforms such as AWS and Azure . Background working with and championing Agile, DevOps - CI/CD practices Technical Exp e r t is e Strong understanding of system arc hitec ture , design patterns, and engineering best practices Exp e r t is e with Infrastructure as Code, DevSecOps , and modern deployment approaches Exp e r t is e in multipl e modern programming languages (e.g. Java, Python, C#, JavaScript) or specialist platforms/tools Exp e r ience with containers and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes) Exp e r ience with event driven arc hitec ture s , IoT message services and API based integrations .
