Blake Oliver Consulting is working with a growing Australian insurance business that’s investing in its data platform as part of a broader modernisation, including a move toward Microsoft Fabric. This role sits within a small reporting function and is focused on building out the underlying data layer properly. It’s not a reporting-only role. The focus is on pipelines, data models, and creating clean, usable datasets that the rest of the business can rely on. You’ll be working closely with the Head of Reporting and stakeholders across underwriting, claims, and operations, so there’s a genuine link between the work you’re doing and how the business operates day to day. The role: Rebuilding and modernising data pipelines as part of a move to Microsoft Fabric Designing and maintaining data models aligned to reporting (star schema, dimensional models) Creating structured, reusable datasets for Power BI Working with business teams to translate requirements into usable data solutions Handling data transformation and wrangling using SQL and Python Improving performance and reliability of existing pipelines Implementing data quality checks and validation processes Supporting Power BI datasets and semantic models where needed Reducing manual reporting through automation across the Microsoft stack Maintaining documentation across pipelines, models, and business logic What they’re looking for: Strong SQL, comfortable with complex queries and optimisation Solid Python for data transformation and automation Experience building and maintaining data pipelines and data models Good understanding of how data is structured for reporting and analytics Experience working in a cloud environment, ideally Microsoft-led Ability to build something scalable rather than working around legacy issues Comfortable working directly with stakeholders across the business Experience in insurance or financial services helps, but isn’t essential. Exposure to Microsoft Fabric or Power BI semantic models is useful, but not required. About the business The organisation operates in the Australian insurance market with a focus on building more modern, data-driven capabilities. The environment is relatively lean, so there’s less separation between teams and more visibility of impact. The current investment into Microsoft Fabric and the broader data platform is a key priority area, so this role sits close to that work rather than being downstream from it.
