This organisation is a publicly owned utilities organisation delivering critical services to the Canberra community and surrounding region. The organisation is currently going through a significant digital and data transformation, positioning data as a key enabler of future service delivery. The Opportunity This is not a traditional reporting or dashboarding role. This opportunity is centred on getting closer to the source using your strong communication and investigative skills to work across the business and address data issues where they originate, not where they surface. You’ll step into an environment where data underpins daily operations, regulatory reporting, and decision-making but where there are known inconsistencies in how that data is captured, managed, and flows between systems. The work is tangible and meaningful. You’ll directly improve how real-world operational data is captured, understood, and used across a large-scale infrastructure environment. This is an initial 12-month contract with strong stability and a high likelihood of extension, given the scale and long-term nature of the work. You’ll also be supported by a pragmatic manager who understands the niche nature of this skillset and offers flexibility accordingly. The Role This is a hands-on data improvement role sitting at the intersection of operations, systems, and data. You’ll be working across core operational platforms (asset management, mobile workforce, GIS) to identify where data is breaking down and more importantly, why. Key aspects include: Investigating and resolving data integrity issues across operational systems Performing hands-on data cleansing across large, complex datasets Tracing data issues back to source (process, system, or user input) Analysing how workflows (dispatch, planning, field input, customer requests) impact data quality Working across teams to correct both data and the underlying process gaps Reconciling data across multiple systems to ensure consistency Helping embed better controls to reduce recurring errors over time Acting as the conduit between operational teams and technical teams This is detailed, investigative work at times requiring line-by-line analysis but always with a focus on improving the broader system and preventing issues from recurring. The Ideal Person This is a highly specific role, and operational water experience is essential. You understand water infrastructure from an asset data perspective you know the difference between a tap, a main, and a valve, and how that translates into systems and data. You’ve likely worked within a water utility, infrastructure provider, or asset-heavy environment where data is generated through real-world operational activities. This may include local or state government, or a transition from a trade or field-based background into data or systems. You will bring: Direct experience working with operational water data (non-negotiable) Experience across systems such as asset management, GIS, or field workforce platforms Strong data investigation and root cause analysis capability Comfort working with complex, imperfect, and fragmented datasets Understanding of how operational processes influence data capture and quality Ability to engage across teams from field crews through to ICT A naturally curious mindset focused on understanding why issues occur, not just fixing them This role is suited to someone who wants to fix how data is created, not just report on it downstream Salary / Rate This is an initial 12-month contract with strong stability and a high likelihood of extension, given the scale of work and long-term need. Due to the unique nature of the role the estimate rate range varies from $60/hr $90/hr Super based on your skills and experience. Flexible working environment with a manager who is pragmatic given how niche this skillset is. How to Apply To apply online, please click on the appropriate link.
