This role requires a highly hands-on technical leader who can design, build, and scale modern data platforms while guiding engineering teams and shaping best practices. The position combines deep engineering expertise, platform architecture, and technical leadership, ensuring that data solutions are robust, scalable, and aligned with business needs. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and implementing modern data engineering solutions, leading complex data initiatives, and driving the organisation’s ability to effectively leverage its data assets. The ideal candidate brings extensive experience across data engineering, large-scale data platform development, distributed data processing, data integration, and modern cloud data ecosystems. They will act as a technical authority while remaining actively involved in building and delivering production-grade data systems. Key Responsibilities Design and Build Data Platforms – Lead the design and development of scalable, reliable, and secure data pipelines, platforms, and infrastructure supporting analytics, reporting, and advanced data use cases. Hands-on Data Engineering Leadership – Act as a senior hands-on engineer, contributing directly to data pipeline development, platform architecture, and complex technical problem-solving. Lead End-to-End Data Engineering Delivery – Drive the delivery of complex data initiatives from design through implementation and optimisation, ensuring high-quality engineering outcomes. Architect Modern Data Solutions – Design and implement modern data architectures including lakehouse, streaming, and real-time data platforms that support enterprise analytics and operational workloads. Establish Engineering Standards – Define and enforce data engineering best practices, coding standards, data modelling patterns, and platform design principles. Build Scalable Data Pipelines – Develop robust ETL/ELT pipelines, real-time data ingestion frameworks, and distributed data processing solutions capable of handling large-scale data volumes. Enable Analytics and Data Science – Partner with analytics teams to ensure the platform supports BI, reporting, machine learning, and advanced analytics workloads efficiently. Drive Integration Across Systems – Design and implement data integration frameworks enabling seamless data flow across operational systems, applications, and analytics platforms. Mentor and Lead Engineers – Provide technical leadership and mentoring to data engineers, helping uplift engineering capability and fostering a culture of technical excellence. Collaborate Across the Organisation – Work closely with architects, product teams, analysts, and business stakeholders to translate requirements into high-quality data engineering solutions. Experience & Skills Required 10 years of experience in data engineering, data platform development, or large-scale data systems Strong hands-on engineering experience building production data pipelines and platforms Proven experience designing and implementing modern data architectures (data lakes, lakehouses, cloud warehouses) Deep expertise in ETL/ELT frameworks, distributed data processing, and large-scale data pipeline orchestration Strong experience with streaming data platforms and real-time data processing Solid background in data modelling, data integration, and scalable data processing frameworks Experience working with modern cloud data ecosystems (AWS, Azure, or GCP) Hands-on experience with tools commonly used in modern data platforms Strong understanding of data quality, reliability, and observability in data pipelines Ability to operate at both strategic and hands-on engineering levels Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills Experience working in large, complex, or regulated environments is highly desirable Before we jump into the responsibilities of the role.
