Our client is an established developer with an active pipeline of utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects, and this is a pivotal hire as they scale their development capability. The Grid Manager will lead all grid connection strategy, technical assessment, and network engagement across the development portfolio. This is a senior, high-accountability role responsible for securing viable, timely, and cost-effective grid outcomes that directly support project delivery and investment decisions. Key Responsibilities Grid Strategy and Portfolio Planning Set and execute the grid strategy across the full project pipeline. Directly accountable for utility-scale activities, with oversight of the grid manager in the sub-5MW team. Drive connection strategy for utility-scale BESS projects (100–500MW), including overseeing R0–R2 submissions, connection enquiries, applications, and connection offers. Lead Generator Performance Standard (GPS) negotiations and PSCAD/PSSE model validation. Identify and manage grid risks early in the development cycle. Advise the Executive on grid capacity, constraints, and timing. Network and Market Engagement Lead relationships with AEMO, network service providers (TNSPs/DNSPs), and technical consultants. Represent the organisation in technical forums and connection negotiations. Interface with TNSPs/DNSPs and AEMO on connection agreements and technical compliance. Manage external advisers supporting modelling and connection studies. Technical Leadership Oversee power system studies, including load flow, fault level, and stability assessments. Review and manage PSCAD and PSS®E models, EMT and RMS studies, system strength impact assessments, and harmonic and fault level studies. Lead negotiation of performance standards covering voltage control, FFR, inertia response, and system strength. Ensure PCS and inverter settings meet agreed GPS and network requirements. Support OEM and EPC contractor selection from a grid compliance perspective. Ensure all technical documentation meets regulatory and network requirements. Commercial and Risk Management Provide input into financial models relating to grid CAPEX/OPEX, contestable and non-contestable scope, and costs. Assess grid-related development, capital expenditure, and delivery risks. Support due diligence processes for investors and lenders. Registration and Commissioning Manage AEMO registration processes (Generator/Market Participant). Oversee commissioning test plans, hold-point sign-offs, R2 model validation, and post-commissioning performance testing. Ensure compliance with AEMO commissioning protocols, FCAS capability testing, and NER Chapter 5 requirements. Construction and Delivery Support Provide grid risk input to EPC negotiations and support the resolution of grid-related issues during construction. Interface with protection engineers and substation teams. Monitor GPS compliance during energisation and ramp-up. About You Essential Requirements Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline. 5–8 years of experience in grid connection, power systems engineering, or TNSP/AEMO roles. Strong understanding of the National Electricity Market and the NEM connection framework. Proven experience engaging directly with AEMO and network service providers. Deep knowledge of the NEM connection process, GPS negotiation, BESS grid behaviour, and system strength frameworks. Strong proficiency in PSCAD and PSS®E modelling, AEMO registration processes, and transmission connection agreements. Commercially aware, with the ability to balance technical and financial outcomes.
