Crown Advocate Attorney-General's Department Location: 5000 - ADELAIDE Job status: Long Term Contract Eligibility: Open to Everyone Location: Adelaide Classification: SAES2 Duration: up to 3 Years Vacancy Type: Full Time Number of Positions Available: 1 Closing Date: 11:30pm, Tuesday, 3, March 2026 About the Opportunity The Crown Advocate will provide advice and representation as counsel in major civil, commercial, administrative law, public law, native title and other litigation conducted by the State. The Crown Advocate will assist the Crown Solicitor in the provision of complex strategic advice to the Government in litigious and potentially litigious contexts, and will contribute to the effective leadership of the Crown Solicitor’s Office (CSO) as a key member of the CSO Senior Leadership Team. The Crown Advocate will accept briefs from solicitors within the CSO or directly from State Government agencies and instrumentalities by arrangement. The Crown Advocate may also accept briefs from external private solicitors who are acting with approval pursuant to Treasurer’s Instruction 10. The Crown Advocate will primarily undertake counsel work including the provision of opinions on litigious matters, advices on evidence and settle pleadings and court documents. The Crown Advocate will, with the assistance of the Assistant Crown Advocate, manage the Crown Counsel Section including the allocation of work and is accountable for the provision of leadership, management and professional development within the Section including performance management and development. The Crown Advocate will ensure that the legal work of the Crown Counsel Section is carried out to a high standard in an efficient and timely manner, and will contribute to the development of excellence in counsel skills across the CSO as a whole. About the Business The Crown Solicitor's Office (CSO) is the law firm of the South Australian Government, providing trusted, expert legal services to the SA Attorney-General, Cabinet, Ministers and all State government agencies. The Crown Counsel section provides advice and advocacy services across the range of legal services delivered by the CSO, much like an in-house team of barristers, who regularly appear on behalf of the state government in state and federal courts and tribunals. Special Conditions for Employment Employment is dependent upon a National Police Certificate clearance that the AGD finds satisfactory. Some out of hours work may be required. Some interstate and intrastate travel may be required. Must currently possess or be eligible to obtain an unrestricted practicing certificate within South Australia.
