Job Title Senior Manager, Grant Management Job Description An excellent opportunity is available for a Senior Manager, Grant Management to join the Grants and Major Bids Department at Australia’s pre-eminent biomedical research institute. About the position The Grants and Major Bids department drives WEHI’s institute‑wide approach to securing and managing research funding across the full funding lifecycle—from concept through to project close‑out—across national, international, philanthropic, government and industry funding streams. Reporting to the Head, Grants and Major Bids, the Senior Manager, Grant Management will lead a small team responsible for post‑award grant management. This includes establishing research grant agreements, managing variations, overseeing reporting obligations and ensuring timely project close‑out. The role provides strategic advice across the Institute to ensure strong grant governance, compliance with funder requirements and effective risk management. A key focus of the position is continuous improvement—strengthening policies, processes and systems to support WEHI’s research ambitions and enable researchers to focus on discovery. The Senior Manager will work closely with researchers, senior leaders and professional services colleagues, and will play a leadership role in embedding best‑practice grant management across WEHI. Selection Criteria Education/Qualifications: Relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent work experience in research management Personal Qualities: Excellent written and verbal communication with the ability to operate with discretion and sensitivity An inclusive and collaborative work style with a high level of energy, initiative, enthusiasm and professionalism A proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and under pressure, with a commitment to continuous personal and business improvement Strong analytical, conceptual and problem-solving skills Highly developed planning and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities concurrently Knowledge and Skills: Substantial contract management experience in government, philanthropic and industry sectors Demonstrated experience in contract preparation, review, negotiation and risk management, leading to excellent corporate and researcher outcomes Strong negotiation and influencing skills with both internal and external stakeholders to negotiate satisfactory outcomes in a prompt, efficient and professional manner Track record of partnering with researchers to manage complex research grants In depth knowledge of grant funding programs, research funding rules and regulatory frameworks, and grant management across the grant lifecycle Proven experience leading teams and managing staff in a research active organisation Experience driving business process improvement and organisational change within a professional services context. Terms of appointment This is a parental leave cover position available for 9 months in a full-time capacity. Salary is Professional Services Employee (PSE) Level 9 ($137,776 - $149,135).
