About the Team & OfficeJoin a high‑performing technology team building the backend systems that power SCA’s digital platforms. You’ll work closely with product, frontend and platform teams to deliver scalable, reliable services, contribute to core infrastructure, and help shape backend solutions and best practices within a collaborative, inclusive environment. Based in our Sydney office at World Square, just a five‑minute walk from Town Hall, you’ll work in a fun and collaborative environment designed to support creativity and innovation. The office is currently trialling a 9‑day fortnight, giving you every second Friday off to rest, recharge and do your best work. A day in the life? As a Senior Backend Engineer, you’ll design, build and maintain scalable backend services using TypeScript, Node.js and GraphQL, supporting secure and reliable systems that evolve with the business. You’ll work closely with product and frontend teams to deliver end‑to‑end solutions, manage data across relational and NoSQL databases, and write clean, well‑documented code that meets high engineering standards. Along the way, you’ll troubleshoot complex issues, contribute to code reviews, mentor junior engineers, and stay across emerging backend technologies to drive continuous improvement. What You’ll Need Extensive experience in Node.js, with a deep understanding of asynchronous programming and event-driven architectures. Proven expertise in designing and implementing GraphQL APIs, including schema design, query optimization, and security best practices. Strong experience with cloud-native and serverless technologies on Google Cloud Platform (or similar), such as Cloud Functions, Firebase, and Cloud Run. Proficiency in TypeScript, writing clear, maintainable, and scalable code. Knowledge of REST APIs, with experience migrating or combining REST with GraphQL services. Understanding of containerization and orchestration tools such as Docker and Kubernetes. Experience working in agile development environments and contributing to sprint planning, estimation, and delivery. Knowledge of caching strategies and tools (e.g., Redis, CDN integration) to improve backend performance. Experience designing systems for scalability and fault tolerance in high-traffic environments. Strong understanding of security best practices, including authentication (e.g., OAuth, JWT) and authorization.
