The Bureau of Meteorology is seeking a dedicated, highly talented professional to fill the role of the Manager Defence Operations - Headquarters Joint Operations Command (MDO-HQJOC). A successful candidate would relish the challenge of working in an environment which is focused on providing outstanding support to Headquarters Joint Operations Command (HQJOC) to achieve safe operations while offering competitive advantage. As an Executive Level 2, the successful applicant will have responsibilities for leading the Meteorological Intelligence Support Team (MIST), setting their strategic direction and building capability to enable service provision to HQJOC. The National Security and Space Program sits within the Bureau's Business Solutions Group and is the primary provider of environmental intelligence to the national security agencies and the space sector. Services provided by this Program enhance Australia's national security agenda through the provision of accurate, timely and relevant environmental intelligence, including space weather, meteorological, oceanographic services and climate data. Services to Defence and the ADF specifically include the provision of forecasts, real-time observations, climatological data and oceanographic data and services, meteorological training, professional advice to assist decision-making and planning and direct support to operations and activities. The Program is also involved in initiating and delivering collaborative capability enhancement projects. The position reports to the Manager Defence and Space Weather Operations and the occupant will work closely with both the Manager Defence Operations - Military Aviation (MDO-MA), the Manager Training and Capability (MTC) and the Defence Relationship Lead to ensure the delivery of efficient and effective domestic and international meteorology services to the ADF. The occupant will contribute to the provision of policy and planning advice to the National Security and Space Program. The occupant will be specifically responsible for personnel and 24/7 operations for the MIST located at HQJOC in Bungendore, 30km from Canberra. Weekly presence on site within HQJOC's classified environment is essential and will be required to build partnerships and communicate effectively with the ADF senior intelligence and planning officer community. The occupant should have a focus on identifying the meteorological advice needed and be confident to step forward and provide this advice to shape operations for success. Some out-of-hours work may be required to support severe events. Excellent stakeholder engagement skills will enable you to work closely with staff and Defence to develop and deliver tailored service offerings. You will also manage various operational projects, human resourcing, and the professional development requirements of the team. The key duties of the position include The responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to: Work collaboratively with the Defence Operations leadership team to plan, develop and deliver targeted services to the Australian Defence Force (ADF), implementing the strategic goals of the National Security and Space Program Plan. Lead and enable close engagement with HQJOC leadership personnel and provide professional advice to projects in support of ADF planning, operations and exercises. Be the primary point of contact for all Joint Operations service development. Hold accountability for the service provision and ongoing management of day-to-day operations at the MIST, ensuring coverage and continuity of support, and in coordination with the MTC, provide guidance on competencies relevant to MIST staff. Provide ongoing leadership and targeted mentorship to all direct reports. Engage broadly across Bureau programs and capability areas to identify, coordinate and deploy the skills, knowledge and expertise required to achieve value and impact for HQJOC, for both ongoing service delivery and for operation/exercise support. The position will be the main point of contact for forecasting systems development and communication. Provide operational leadership to Defence Weather Services staff in supporting joint operations and exercises at a national level, including leading cross-agency responses to major events. Manage the implementation of strategies for the quality and effectiveness of products and services and the ongoing development, implementation and continual improvement of the quality management system to achieve and maintain the ongoing certification of compliance with the ISO 9001 quality management standard. Lead the planning for leave requests and movements for Defence Weather Services nationally.
