A large commercial client is looking for a Project Engineer to join their, acting as the Owner’s Engineer on wastewater treatment plant upgrades and Dangerous Goods handling projects across the Sydney region. In this client-side role, you’ll provide technical oversight from early concept and FEED through design, construction, commissioning, and handover. You’ll work closely with project managers, contractors, consultants, and operations teams to ensure upgrades to live wastewater facilities are safe, compliant, and fit for long-term operation. Key responsibilities Review and approve engineering designs from consultants, EPC/EPCM contractors, and vendors Provide technical input across feasibility, concept development, and FEED Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering inputs across civil, mechanical, electrical, I&C, and process disciplines Support construction with technical queries, site inspections, non-conformance resolution, and hold points Support commissioning, performance testing, and handover Interface closely with operations to manage brownfield works in live plants Lead and participate in engineering risk reviews (HAZID, HAZOP, MOC, constructability) Ensure compliance with WHS, environmental, and regulatory requirements Support cost, schedule, procurement, and change management activities Project scope may include Wastewater process upgrades and capacity expansions Mechanical and electrical equipment replacement Nutrient removal, odour control, and treatment process improvements Control system and instrumentation upgrades Civil and structural works within operating facilities Environmental and licence-driven compliance upgrades About you Degree qualified in Engineering (Mechanical, Process, or similar) 5 years’ experience in project or owner-side engineering roles within water, wastewater, utilities, or heavy infrastructure Experience acting as an Owner’s Engineer or client-side technical representative Strong understanding of wastewater treatment processes Comfortable working on brownfield projects in live operating environments Confident reviewing and challenging engineering designs and contractor methodologies Strong communicator with the ability to engage across technical and operational teams Desirable Experience delivering WWTP upgrades in NSW Familiarity with Sydney Water, EPA, and local authority requirements EPC/EPCM delivery experience CPEng or working toward chartership If you’re a technically strong engineer who enjoys owner-side responsibility, complex brownfield projects, and working closely with operations, this is a great opportunity to make a real impact.
