Own the systems engineering approach and lifecycle delivery across multiple complex hardware-software programs We are seeking a Lead Systems Engineer to establish and lead a systems engineering capability within a multidisciplinary engineering environment in Sydney. This is a senior, hands-on role for an engineer who has delivered complex, mission-critical systems into real-world use. The role combines system architecture, integration, validation, and technical leadership, with responsibility for defining how systems engineering is applied across multiple programs. You will work across the full system lifecycle, from early concept and requirements through integration, testing, field deployment, and transition into service, while mentoring engineers and acting as a senior technical authority. Responsibilities Own the systems engineering approach and lifecycle delivery across multiple complex hardware-software programs Establish and maintain systems engineering standards, processes, and documentation , including requirements management, architecture, verification, validation, and configuration control Act as system-level technical authority , balancing performance, risk, schedule, and operational constraints Lead the integration of multidisciplinary subsystems , including electronics, embedded systems, mechanics, instrumentation, and software Develop and maintain system architectures, interface definitions, and requirements baselines , ensuring traceability from user needs through to verification Apply a risk-led, shift-left approach , identifying integration and delivery risks early and reducing them through iterative design and testing Plan and execute integration, environmental, functional, and operational testing in both laboratory and field environments Lead field trials and operational testing , including system preparation, configuration, logistics, on-site setup, operation, troubleshooting, and post-trial reporting Work closely with product, program, and commercial teams to align engineering activity with delivery milestones and customer expectations Produce and maintain high-quality technical documentation , including requirements sets, interface documents, test plans and reports, operating procedures, and configuration records Mentor and develop systems engineers and cross-disciplinary team members, setting a high standard for technical judgement and delivery discipline Required experience Degree-qualified in Systems, Aerospace, Electrical, Mechanical, or related engineering discipline Proven experience delivering complex, mission-critical systems across the full lifecycle, from concept through to deployment Strong background in systems integration and validation of hardware-software systems Experience working in regulated, safety-critical, or high-reliability environments Demonstrated ability to lead systems engineering activities and act as a senior technical authority Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to translate operational needs into system-level requirements T echnical skills Requirements management, system architecture, and interface control Integration of electronics, embedded systems, mechanical assemblies, instrumentation, and software Hands-on testing and validation, including environmental and operational testing Use of test and measurement equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, spectrum analysers, and data acquisition systems Ability to interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, mechanical drawings, and system architectures Strong technical documentation capability (requirements, test plans, reports, operating manuals) Familiarity with configuration management and collaboration tools (e.g. Jira, Confluence or equivalent) Great role in a very highly renowned team.
