About the role: We’re looking for a motivated and skilled Development Standards Officer to join our government based local council client on a contract basis. The Development Standards Officer position promotes the amenity, environmental value and liveability of Isaac Region through investigative processes that maximise compliance with building, planning and environment related legislation. As a member of this multi-disciplinary team, this position ensures an efficient and effective service is provided and that the outcomes, particularly in the area of development compliance are of a high standard, consistent with Council and community expectations. Responsibilities include but not limited too: 1. Identify and assess development with reference to the Planning Act 2016, the Local Government Act 2009, the Environmental Protection Act 1994, the Building Act 1975 and Isaac Regional Council Planning Schemes; 2. Apply technical knowledge of planning legislation, planning instruments and relevant development codes and policies to make sound decisions about inspection techniques, relevant offences, and suitable penalties; 3. Undertake investigations, gather evidence, facilitate resolution of issues, and initiate prompt enforcement outcomes, if required, in accordance with legislation; 4. Provide clear and consistent advice and direction, demonstrating transparency, integrity and sound judgement; 5. The council’s core role is to plan, manage and deliver essential services and infrastructure—such as roads, water, wastewater and waste management—while fostering sustainable economic and community development for residents and businesses. It provides facilities, community programs, regulatory services, asset planning and local laws, and advocates for regional needs with state and federal governments, all aimed at enhancing quality of life and long-term resilience across the region. To be successful you will have the following: Essential 1. Knowledge of the Queensland planning, building and environment legislative framework; 2. Highly developed conceptual, analytical and problem-solving skills in a specialist technical environment. Experience 1. Experience (2 – 4years) in undertaking investigations and determining appropriate compliance or enforcement strategies. 2. Experience in all aspects of commercial and domestic Building and plumbing systems; 3. Demonstrated experience leading investigations of complex issues involving multiple stakeholders; 4. Demonstrated experience in reading and interpreting planning and building legislation, planning schemes, policies, development conditions and plans of development. 5. Demonstrated experience in delivering quality customer service as a technical expert who can translate complex information into simple concepts to facilitate customer understanding and manage expectations. Qualifications Mandatory – this role requires the possession of: 1. C Class Open Australian Drivers Licence. Desirable 1. Tertiary qualifications in Planning, Building, Development Control or related discipline. 2. Certificate IV in Government Investigations or equivalent (or ability to obtain within 12-months of appointment). 3. This position will be required to administer ‘authorised person’ powers under relevant legislation and must be appointed as an authorised person in accordance with the appropriate legislation.
