Your role within the team The National Transport Manager is responsible for leading the organisation’s end-to-end transport strategy, performance and cost efficiency across a national network. This role manages strategic relationships with carriers, brokers, and 4PL partners, oversees tendering and contract lifecycles, and drives service excellence through data-led performance management. The position plays a critical role in optimising transport spend, ensuring compliance and governance, mitigating supply chain risk, and leveraging technology platforms (including TMS, MachShip and NetSuite) to enhance visibility, control, and reporting. Working cross-functionally with warehousing, procurement and customer value chain teams, the National Transport Manager contributes to long-term logistics strategy and continuous process improvement aligned with business objectives. This exciting role will also pioneer opportunities for green and renewable transport options. Key responsibilities include: Strategic Carrier & 4PL Management: Actively managing relationships and performance with a network of carriers, brokers, and 4PL providers. Tender & Contract Lifecycle Management: Leading the end-to-end process for both short and long-term transport tenders and contract negotiations. Cost Efficiency & Reduction: Analysing transport spend data to identify, propose and implement cost-saving initiatives. Service Level Performance: Monitoring and driving improvements in customer service metrics through carrier performance management. Data Analysis & Reporting: Utilising advanced Excel skills to analyse transport data, create performance dashboards and provide actionable insights. Process Improvement: Continuously reviewing and refining transport and logistics processes for greater efficiency. Budget Management: Developing and managing the transport budget, ensuring adherence and explaining variances. Carrier Rate & Charge Validation: Scrutinising 4PL and carrier invoices and charging models to ensure accuracy and contractual compliance. Risk Mitigation: Developing contingency plans to manage risks within the supply chain and ensure service continuity. Technology Utilisation: Leveraging transport management systems (TMS) and software tools to enhance visibility and control. Compliance & Governance: Ensuring all transport activities comply with relevant regulations and company policies. Strategic Planning: Contributing to the development of long-term logistics and supply chain strategy. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Working closely with warehousing, procurement, and customer value chain teams to align transport activities with business goals. Leverage reporting and planning in MachShip, Netsuite and supporting software. Stakeholder Relationship Management: Building and maintaining strong strategic relationships with key partners (carriers, 4PLs, internal stakeholders). To make sure we’re setting new starters up for success, we ask that you meet a few criteria relevant to the role to be considered for this opportunity: 5–8 years’ proven experience in Transport or Freight Management, with a focus on 4PL models, brokers and direct carrier engagement. Demonstrated experience developing transport strategies and delivering short- and long-term tender contracts with multiple partners. Proven capability in strategic relationship management and effective strategy deployment. Solid understanding of carrier and 4PL processes, including pricing and charging mechanisms. Demonstrated success in delivering major program efficiencies across customer service and cost, supported by reporting and analysis of transport and cost data. Strong computer skills (intermediate to advanced), particularly in Excel and Word. Tertiary qualification in Supply Chain, Logistics, or a related field (advantageous but not essential).
