Your Opportunity As the Vessel Master you will master the TAFE training vessels. This position reports to the Business Manager This is a Permanent, Full-Time opportunity The position will be based primarily at Cairns however you may be required to perform work at other TAFE Queensland campuses. Key Responsibilities Manage, maintain and operate the primary TAFE Queensland North Vessel and equipment in accordance with the relevant vessel safety management systems, workplace health and safety practices and principles relevant Maritime legislation. Manage the operation and legislative compliance of TAFE Queensland North Training vessels. Development and implementation of safety management and risk assessment documentation for TAFE Queensland North Training vessels and associated equipment. Train and induct staff and students regarding vessel safety and general operation of vessel. Manage the engineering and maintenance requirements of TAFE Queensland North vessels and associated equipment. Including periodic surveys and refit requirements. Research procurement opportunities for the marine college, in accordance with procurement and financial guidelines, as required. Liaise and coordinate work with outside contractors. Initiate, monitor and prepare reports on staff training and induction, engineering requirements and issues aboard the vessels. Develop and implement procedures for effective management, maintenance and repair of mechanical aspects of the vessels and equipment. Establish and maintain effective relationships and communication with staff, students, clients and external contractors. Maintain an understanding of the commercial aspects of TAFE including financial and business performance and any impact from external factors. How you will be assessed The ideal applicant will be someone who has the following key capabilities: Knowledge and experience of or in the marine industry or ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of the legislative requirements relating to commercial vessels and Workplace Health and Safety principles and practices. Displays flexibility and responsiveness and has the initiative, attitude and ability to thrive within a dynamic, challenging and changing environment. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Well-developed written communication skills with the ability to prepare reports and plans relevant to the management of vessels and equipment. Commits to achieving quality outcomes, keeps up to date with emerging technologies and implements relevant applications in appropriate settings.
