Key Responsibilities As a Chef at Afghan Central Restaurant, your role will include duties: Prepare, cook, and present a wide range of authentic Afghan and multicultural dishes for lunch and dinner service, using various cooking methods including grilling, frying, oven, tandoor, and pan cooking, in line with menu standards and customer expectations. Assist in menu planning, development of daily specials, and refinement of recipes to ensure consistency, portion control, and food quality, in accordance with the restaurant’s cuisine style and business objectives. Supervise, coordinate, and support kitchen staff and junior cooks engaged in food preparation and service, ensuring efficient workflow during busy service periods. Manage food preparation processes from kitchen opening to closing, including mise en place, service execution, and end-of-day kitchen operations. Monitor food quality, presentation, and cooking techniques to maintain consistency across all services and comply with established kitchen standards. Oversee food storage, stock rotation, and inventory control, including checking deliveries, placing supplier orders, and minimising food wastage and costs. Ensure strict compliance with food safety, hygiene, and workplace health and safety standards as required under Australian regulations and local council guidelines. Assist the Head Chef with kitchen operations, cost control, and staff supervision while demonstrating leadership, reliability, and the ability to work independently when required. Maintain cleanliness, organisation, and functionality of kitchen equipment, arranging maintenance or repairs as necessary. What We’re Looking For Minimum 1 year of relevant experience working as a Chef or Cook in a busy commercial kitchen or multicultural restaurant environment. Relevant trade qualifications , including relevant Certificates ( e.g.,Certificate IV in Commercial Cookery ), with a Diploma of Hospitality Management is required. Strong practical knowledge of food preparation, cooking techniques, and kitchen operations , including grill, frying, oven, tandoor, and pan cooking methods. Proven ability to prepare and cook a variety of dishes while maintaining consistency, quality, and presentation standards during high-volume service periods. Good communication and teamwork skills , with the ability to supervise junior kitchen staff and work collaboratively with the Head Chef and service team. Desirable Attributes Previous experience working in busy, established restaurants or commercial kitchens , particularly within multicultural or ethnic cuisine environments , with the ability to manage high-volume service periods. Strong practical skills in advanced cooking techniques and multiple cooking methods (grill, frying, oven, tandoor, pans, and pastry), with the ability to maintain food quality and consistency. Demonstrated capability to supervise and support junior kitchen staff , providing on-the-job guidance, training, and mentoring to improve kitchen efficiency and standards. Experience assisting with menu planning, daily specials creation, and cost control , including food portioning, stock rotation, and wastage reduction.
