As part of the wider Rusca Group, we bring over four decades of experience delivering high-quality civil, infrastructure, and modular construction solutions across remote and regional Australia. Our mission is to create meaningful, lasting change through innovation in construction and genuine community engagement. At Rusca Developments, we’re not just building infrastructure — we’re building futures. We are deeply committed to empowering Indigenous Australians through training, employment, and career development opportunities, with a strong focus on sustainability, safety, and excellence. Join us in shaping impactful projects that make a real difference. About the role: As a Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, compliance, fabrication integration and commissioning of mechanical systems for modular and remote housing projects delivered across the Northern Territory. The role involves engineering and integrating building services mechanical systems including heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC), mechanical ventilation, domestic water supply, sanitary plumbing, hot water systems, fire and smoke control systems, and energy-efficient climate control solutions. You will ensure all mechanical designs comply with the National Construction Code (NCC), relevant Australian Standards and WHS regulations, and are suitable for tropical and remote operating conditions. Working closely with design, fabrication and construction teams, you will support off-site modular manufacturing, coordinate mechanical installations, and oversee testing, commissioning and handover of mechanical systems to ensure safe, compliant and reliable operation. Key Responsibilities: Review project documentation, functional statements and organisational structures to clearly define mechanical engineering responsibilities across modular fabrication and remote housing projects, ensuring effective allocation of engineering and site resources and eliminating duplication of effort. Analyse work methods, labour utilisation and fabrication workflows to establish efficient engineering and installation processes for mechanical systems within off-site manufacturing and on-site construction environments. Assess workforce deployment, facility layouts, equipment usage, production schedules and project costs to optimise the performance and efficiency of mechanical installations, plant and construction activities. Design, develop and evaluate mechanical building services systems for modular and remote housing, including HVAC, ventilation, plumbing, hot water and fire-related mechanical systems, ensuring suitability for transportable construction and tropical operating conditions. Prepare detailed mechanical engineering specifications, calculations and documentation, including the selection of materials, equipment, piping arrangements, system capacities and plant layouts to support compliant and constructible modular designs. Coordinate mechanical engineering input with project teams, suppliers and contractors to support the planning and delivery of labour, materials, plant and equipment required for mechanical system fabrication, installation and commissioning. Establish and apply engineering standards, procedures and quality controls for the installation, modification, testing and inspection of mechanical systems in accordance with engineering principles, safety regulations, the NCC and relevant Australian Standards. Conduct inspections, testing and commissioning activities to verify mechanical system performance, identify defects or inefficiencies, and ensure systems operate safely, efficiently and as designed. Provide technical direction for the maintenance, upgrade and integration of mechanical systems, and contribute to new designs, site surveys and maintenance planning to support the ongoing performance of modular and remote housing assets. Requirements: Bachelor’s degree or higher qualification in Mechanical Engineering from a recognised institution. Minimum of 8 years’ post-qualification professional experience as a Mechanical Engineer, with demonstrated involvement in the design, specification, installation and commissioning of mechanical systems for building services, construction or modular housing projects. Proven experience in HVAC, mechanical ventilation, plumbing, hot water and related mechanical building systems, preferably within modular, prefabricated or remote construction environments. Experience coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, including design, fabrication, construction and commissioning personnel, to deliver compliant and efficient mechanical engineering solutions. Ability to interpret engineering drawings, prepare technical documentation, and provide engineering oversight throughout fabrication, installation and commissioning phases.
