About Arcanys Arcanys is a privately owned 300 people company, with about 280 software engineers, QAs, PMs, BAs and designers in the Philippines. While looking like just another technology outsourcing firm, Arcanys is at the forefront of the industry, both helping startups and mid-sized companies to scale their development team, and making meaningful financial investments in early stage startups with its Arcanys Ventures arm. With a pace of about 10 new investments per year, the majority of them are in Australia. While Arcanys has a team of 5 senior architects based in Europe and one in Sydney. With increasing demand, we need to hire one more architect based in Melbourne or Sydney. We are flexible with hiring someone part-time/hourly or full time. We care more about finding people with the right skillset and mindset, with a preference for full time. But if you can’t for now, part-time is a good way to start working together. What’s this role about? We are investing in tech startups that need engineering teams. Our contribution is usually a whole team of 3-4 software engineers and a few part-time people, in exchange for equity. Sometimes the companies have a strong tech lead and all we need to provide them with are developers and QAs, but in other situations, they are lacking a strong technical lead. That is where you would come in, essentially acting as a fractional CTO. The role is challenging because you essentially would be interacting with the business people (most often the founders) and try to rein them in, protect the dev team, focus the needs of the business and translate them to the dev team. Sometimes they have a product manager, but not always, and you may need to partially fill that role (and we can have a business analyst and/or a UX designer assist you). Ideally, you would act as a fractional CTO for 2 to 3 companies (working between 30 to 50 hours per month per company) with the remaining time collaborating with our architect team on improving Arcanys’ internal functions (hiring, training, internal applications). We might also need your help with: Meeting an occasional founder / investment opportunity in person Doing a technical code audit of a potential new investment Consult on other projects regarding specific expertise you may have What are the required skills / conditions? Non-negotiables You must be residing in Melbourne or Sydney or have the ability to meet people in person in one of these cities on a regular basis (without an added cost of long distance travel to us). If you don’t meet this criteria please do not apply! We need someone who can meet our investment companies and clients in person. Must be an expert in Microsoft C# .NET or Nodejs. Mastery of React (Angular or Vue are nice to have). Experience with Ionic & React Native would be a plus. Other interesting languages covered in a minority of our projects: Python, Java Other requirements Minimum 15 years working experience in software development Extensive RDBMS experience, such as MySQL, MsSQL, MariaDB, or PostgreSQL Solid experience with Azure and AWS, good knowledge of DevOps is a plus Nice to haves would be any of these, for the rare project: Python, Kotlin, iOS Swift, Java (enterprise), Golang What are the responsibilities? It may be some of these, but not necessarily all of them: Interact with product owners to improve and translate requirements into realistic features Review architecture regularly Handle frequent code reviews and coach developers Perform code audits in potential client projects or investments Handle ad-hoc complex matters (possibly coding, DevOps matters, etc). As part of the architect team, help Arcanys with the continuous improvement and development of its teams Participate in occasional recruitment activities (exam reviews and/or interviews) Handle occasional research on the newest frameworks and technologies to help improve Arcanys training plans As a company focused on its people satisfaction first (and clients’ in close second), we make a point to offer exciting work opportunities and foster a culture that everyone can meaningfully contribute to.
