About the opportunity The role Staff Specialist Rural Emergency Medical Officer (SMO) involves provision of emergency and inpatient medical services for an agreed Level 3 Facilities within the Townsville Hospital and Health Service including: Charters Towers Hospital, Ingham Hospital and Ayr Hospital. The local multidisciplinary team is supplemented by visiting specialist medical, dental, nursing, and allied health services from Townsville Hospital and Health Service (THHS), Non-Government Organisations and Private Providers. Telehealth services are utilised frequently to reduce the need for patient travel to Townsville where appropriate. SMO's are expected to participate in both in patient and Emergency department care of patients. SMO also undertake non-clinical duties include quality improvement and patient safety related activities, mandatory training completion, continued professional development, supervision requirements for junior doctors, teaching and research. The successful applicants will engage as a leader within the Level 3 Hospital that they are working and manage the provision of medical services in accordance with the standard of the speciality of an Emergency Specialist working in a generalist hospital, the ethics of the profession and in accordance with the THHS and Queensland Health (QH) policies. Charters Towers Hospital is a 20 Bed facility with a 24 hour emergency department and Level 3 CFCS capacity. Possession of a Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) from a registered tertiary institution. Current registration (or be eligible for registration) with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) to practice emergency medicine.
