Tourism Australia is seeking a highly skilled and strategic Head of Media Relations with a strong track record in corporate media relations, strategic communications and crisis management. This pivotal role is responsible for driving proactive news and trade media opportunities that promote Tourism Australia's strategies, activities, and the vital contribution of tourism to the Australian economy. This role is perfect for a strategist who is passionate about amplifying the economic and cultural impact of tourism through compelling media narratives, directly enhancing Tourism Australia's reputation worldwide. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Developing and leading a comprehensive media engagement strategy to demonstrate the positive social, environmental and economic impact and contribution of tourism to Australia. Influencing media stories to demonstrate Tourism Australia’s role and leadership in inbound tourism, including strategic priorities in sustainability, Indigenous tourism and accessibility. Managing communications with media, Ministerial and government offices and industry associations on proactive opportunities and issues. Managing issues to protect and enhance Tourism Australia’s reputation. Providing essential media support to the Communications and Government Relations teams for Ministerial activities and the preparation of key materials (e.g. media releases, statements and speeches). ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE Experience: Demonstrated success in developing and implementing high-level corporate PR strategies. Extensive experience in day-to-day media liaison, including issues and crisis management, and a strong understanding of "news" values. Demonstrated ability to navigate and provide corporate positions on political issues and maintain alignment with government policy. Demonstrated ability to provide corporate positions on political issues. Exceptional written and verbal communication, editing, and sub-editing skills, capable of producing timely and succinct high-quality materials. Superior interpersonal skills with a collaborative, team-oriented approach, and proven networking ability. Proven ability to work under pressure, meet tight deadlines, and respond quickly to sensitive issues in a high-pressure environment. Proven ability to manage highly sensitive information and respect confidentiality. A Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Media, Journalism, or a related field is preferable.
