About the Role As a 3D Physical Modeller (Clay Modeller), you will be responsible for delivering high-quality clay model surfaces that adhere to design direction, engineering requirements, and automotive surface language. This role demands effective collaboration within a dynamic team environment and requires agility to transition across 3D Physical Modelling disciplines such as CNC milling, fabrication and 3D printing. This position reports directly to the 3D Prototyping Manager and is based at the design studio in Broadmeadows, operating on a hybrid schedule with four days in the office. Responsibilities Physical Model Development: Develop physical models and determine the best tools and techniques to deliver the most accurate execution within timing and project constraints. Studio Team Integration: Be an integral member of studio design teams. Model Delivery to Specification: Deliver a finished physical model to specification using all available tools, from sketches to engineering data. Advanced Prototype Setup: Setup armatures, processes, and procedures to deliver advanced prototypes with speed and accuracy. Model Finishing Techniques: Finish models utilizing techniques such as film/foil application, hard part finishing and fitment, and various painting and finishing techniques. Design Direction Application: Apply tapes for design direction and to support the clay model development process. Safety & Workspace Maintenance: Operate all equipment safely and maintain a safe and clean work environment. Qualifications Education: Bachelor's degree in industrial design, or a related technical field. Experience (Clay Modelling): Minimum 3 years of clay modelling experience. Surface Development Competency: Aptitude and competency in understanding surface development and procedures in all physical modelling techniques. Clay Sculpting Proficiency: Proficiency in clay sculpting and finishing techniques. 2D to 3D Translation: Ability to translate 2D sketches into 3D clay surfaces. Stakeholder Collaboration: Ability to support the team in quickly sculpting clay models to share the design intent with relevant stakeholders (e.g., engineering, suppliers, creative designers, and management). Adaptability and Creative Process: Ability to work in a dynamic environment, embracing the creative process with a willingness to adjust design direction as needed. Automotive Industry Knowledge: Excellent understanding of the automotive industry, design practices, and general product development processes. Teamwork: Ability to work flexibly in a team environment. Preferred Qualifications: Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Workshop and Fabrication Experience: Experience in a workshop environment, with skills in relevant equipment/machinery and fabrication techniques to support 3D prototype builds. Milling Machine Knowledge: Knowledge of studio milling machine setup and operation is an advantage; however, training can be made available to the successful applicant. 3D CAD Software Awareness: Awareness or basic level skill in 3D CAD packages such as Maya and/or Autodesk Alias is an advantage.
