Rail Estimator Location : Based in our busy East Coast offices; Brisbane - Banyo | Port Melbourne | or Sydney - Seven Hills About the role The Rail Estimator will be responsible for producing accurate and competitive cost estimates for track, overhead line electrification (OLE) and when required other associated rail civil works. This role requires a strong understanding of the rail sector (Track, OLE and Civil), cost management, and railway infrastructure. Key Responsibilities; Estimate preparation: Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates for track, overhead line electrification systems, and associated rail infrastructure. Market engagement: Develop lump sum pricing on a range of rail infrastructure projects using first principle estimates and open market quotes from subcontractors and suppliers. Collaboration with stakeholders: Work closely with project managers, engineers, and clients to ensure that estimates are aligned with project requirements and technical specifications. Technical analysis: Analyse design drawings, specifications, and technical documents to determine the scope of work and produce cost-effective, precise cost estimations. Risk & Opportunity analysis: Support the tender team in identification of potential risks and opportunities in project delivery and provide suitable costings. Tender documentation: Prepare and review tender documents for track and OLE projects, ensuring all aspects of costs, including labour, materials, and equipment, are accurately reflected. Tender reviews: Conduct tender review meetings with Senior Management Team leadership and mentoring: Lead and mentor junior estimators or staff, sharing technical expertise and offering guidance on complex estimation issues. Client engagement: Engage with clients and contractors to clarify project requirements, technical specifications, and to communicate estimates effectively. Continuous improvement: Contribute to the continuous improvement of estimating practices and tools, ensuring they align with industry standards and technological advancements. Skills and qualifications Essential Skills Proven experience as a rail estimator, in track and overhead line electrification or traction power systems. Advanced knowledge of cost estimation, direct, indirect, R&O and cashflow. Preparing Cashflows in Excel. Understanding of relevant industry standards, codes, and regulations. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Proficient in reading and interpreting engineering drawings, schematics, and specifications. Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple projects simultaneously. Strong communication skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with clients, contractors, and internal teams. Ability to prepare and present detailed reports and cost build-ups. Qualifications Qualified in Civil Engineering (or equivalent) would be advantageous. Certification in cost estimating or project management Relevant experience in the rail and infrastructure industry (5 years). Must hold a full Australian driver’s licence Personal Attributes Strong leadership and mentoring abilities. Attention to detail and high level of accuracy in cost estimation. Proactive, with a problem-solving mindset. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
