The Employer Our clients are a family-owned farming business that owns a large holding based near Avenel in central Victoria. This mixed farming property spans approximately 4,800 hectares. It is currently undergoing a significant strategic review and transition to optimise the livestock mix, with a focus on pasture improvement, operational systems and profitability. The picturesque property ranges from undulating pastures to steep country, with some attractive and productive river flats. The flock of approximately 7,000 ewes has a renewed focus on breeding dual-purpose Merino sheep, utilising elite genetics to produce fine wool and early maturing animals. This includes 5,000 fine wool Merino ewes joined to Merino rams and 1,500-2,000 ewes joined to terminals, with around 10,000 sheep to be shorn annually. There are also about 300 head of cattle on the property in the process of transitioning from Hereford to Angus genetics. A significant area is under development, with high-performing perennial pasture renewal ongoing to lift carrying capacity and efficiency. Fencing, water, and infrastructure, including laneways, have been established, along with good shearing facilities. However, further upgrades, such as additional stockyards, may be required for optimal future management. The property also includes a separate 32-acre vineyard managed independently of the livestock operation. The Role We are searching for an experienced, enthusiastic, and self-motivated Farm Manager to lead this progressive grazing operation during an exciting phase of growth and refinement. Reporting to the absentee owners, the ideal candidate will have a high degree of autonomy in day-to-day decisions while providing professional reporting to owners, with guidance available from an external consultant on strategic matters. The successful applicant will - Have a proven background in managing a mixed farming business with expert knowledge of sheep and cattle breeding, genetics transition and management (sheep focus). Demonstrate strong expertise in pasture management, innovation, renovation, weed identification and grazing strategies, including overseeing perennial pasture renewal programs. Be skilled in budgeting and accurate stock management, with confidence in articulating issues, decisions and progress to owners. Be computer literate, including effective use of farm management software like AgriWeb for reporting and operations. Provide a monthly written report on farm activities, sales, purchases, rainfall and key metrics. Competently operate and maintain modern farming machinery, oversee infrastructure improvements and lead a small team including an overseer and farmhands. Be trustworthy, honest, and loyal to staff and stock, with a self-starting, straight-shooting approach and excellent character. Have good working dogs (essential). Be hands-on with a strong work ethic, capable of leading by example and fostering team stability.
