Maximum hours 40 hours per week Security clearance Must be able to obtain Negative Vetting Level 1 Job details The Applications Modernisation Section within DFAT's Information Management and Technology Division has a requirement to fill an ICT labour hire vacancy in the role of UI/UX Designer to support the Digital Uplift Program (DUP) based on identified Work Packages. Key duties and responsibilities The successful candidate will: Collaborate with stakeholders, including delivery managers, system analysts, and organisational change managers, to design user-centered interfaces for government systems and platforms. Conduct user research, interviews, and usability testing to gather insights and incorporate user feedback into design iterations. Create wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity designs that align with government policy requirements and accessibility standards (e.g. WCAG 2.1). Develop user journeys, personas, and experience maps to understand and improve user interactions with government services. Ensure all UI/UX designs align with government design standards, such as the Australian Government's Digital Service Standard or similar frameworks in other jurisdictions. Work with developers to ensure seamless implementation of designs and maintain design integrity throughout the development process. Advocate for user-centered design principles while balancing business and policy requirements in government projects. Provide guidance on accessibility best practices and ensure compliance with legal standards for inclusivity. Contribute to the continuous improvement of design processes and tools within the team. (2) Relevant Bachelor's degree and relevant (up-to date) certifications in UI/UX design (e.g. UX Design Professional, Certified Professional in Web. Accessibility (CPWA) are highly desirable. (3) Coding skills. (4) An understanding of Australian Government frameworks. About the team The Applications Modernisation (APP) section within the Business Solution Branch (BSB) is DCB funded to assist the Digital Uplift Program (DUP) through a series of identified Work Packages. APP was initiated in response to the growing need for a more secure, agile and responsive ICT infrastructure. The original request came from the Information Management and Technology Division (IMD), which identified various legacy systems that were becoming increasingly difficult to maintain and integrate with newer technologies. APP aims to rehost applications that currently operate on 2008/2012 servers within DFAT to more secure and supported infrastructure. Successful delivery of the project will enhance operational efficiency and reduce the high risk of cyber-attacks and system failures. This uplift will enable the Department to leverage new technologies and ensure better integration across various systems. Criteria The buyer has specified that each candidate must provide a one-page pitch to address all criteria specified . This is equal to 5000 characters. - 800 words Essential criteria 1. Proven UI/UX Design Expertise. 2. Accessibility knowledge. 3. Collaboration and communication. 4. Technical proficiency with design tools such as e.g. Figma, Adobe XD, Axure RP and other recognised industry standard tools. 5. Government policy and standards knowledge. 6.Current active NV1 security clearance. Desirable criteria 1. Service Design expertise. 2. Experience with large-scale government projects. 3. Data-driven design. 4. Experience with legacy systems. Additional requirements 1.Candidate to acknowledge that DFAT has a contractor stand-down period within December and January each year. Duration of the stand-down is at DFAT's discretion and usually for a period of 4-6 weeks. 2.Candidate to acknowledge that offered candidates must have an existing active security clearance at the minimum level of NV1. DFAT will not sponsor a new security clearance or NV1 upgrade for this role.
