Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) is seeking an experienced and dynamic Head of Department (HOD) to lead the Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy team. This permanent role provides strategic leadership and effective management of educational delivery, commercial operations, and stakeholder engagement to achieve departmental goals and contribute to the College’s strategic objectives. This position oversees a team of approximately 17 staff members and is responsible for managing and coordinating the commercial operations of the hair, barbering, and beauty salons. The role includes: Ensuring high-quality service delivery. Driving performance and innovation in day-to-day operations. Leading the marketing and promotion of all client services to enhance the department’s reputation and industry engagement. Industry & Profession: Demonstrated ability to contribute to CIT’s strategic intent, meeting the needs of employers and industry. Highly developed written and oral communication skills and the ability to liaise effectively with staff, industry, community, and clients. Evident knowledge of Australian Apprenticeship systems and how they apply to the Hair and Beauty Industry Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective industry networks. Demonstrated capacity to contribute to a strategic planning process, to develop and implement new initiatives, including commercial activities and to manage change. For managers at the Manager Education – Level 1: All employees at Educator Level 1.3 to the Head of Department Level must hold a full Training and Assessment Certificate IV level qualification (such as a TAE40116 or equivalent) and a Diploma of Vocational Education and Training (or equivalent.) Registration/licensing: All CIT and ACTPS employees are required to complete a criminal history record check form prior to employment. Prior to commencing this role, a current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 is required. Industry Experience and Desirable Qualifications: Desirable for adult learning and development qualifications, as well as leadership and management, business, or commerce related bachelor level qualifications and/or relevant industry specialisations. Industry experience is highly desirable (although this does not have to be in the disciplines being supervised). Vocational qualifications are not required.
