Our Team The Maritime Jurisdiction Advice section is in the Oceans, Reefs, Coasts and the Antarctic Branch. The Maritime Jurisdiction Advice Section is responsible for defining the authoritative location of Australia's maritime boundaries and providing digital spatial data representation of marine jurisdiction rights, restrictions and responsibilities under Commonwealth Legislation. The Maritime Jurisdiction Advice Section advises the Australian Government on matters where the location of maritime boundaries are a part of the decision-making process or affect Australian Government interests. This includes: Providing advice during the drafting of legislation such as ensuring the legislation can be represented geographically and coordinated with other offshore legislation; Translating legislation into precise and fit-for-purpose geospatial data to enable legal decision making and support enforcement. Making geospatial regulatory data publicly accessible through digital platforms. Extending these capabilities to governments in our region. The key duties of the position include As part of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's Southeast Asian Maritime Partnerships, Geoscience Australia assists Southeast Asian maritime states in the Marine Resources Initiative to address maritime challenges via training, technical advice, and cooperation. To date, we have been delivering activities in partnership with Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam and we are expanding into Malaysia and Brunei. This continues Australia's long history of partnership with countries to improve administration, planning and sustainable resource management in their offshore jurisdictions, and work with the international community to improve global marine planning and information sharing. The section comprises a diverse team with capabilities in geospatial and data science, geodesy, maritime law and marine zone management that work to deliver certainty, stability, predictability and visibility to Australia's international and domestic maritime boundaries. Joining our team presents an exciting opportunity to contribute geoscience data information and advice to secure and manage Australia's maritime jurisdiction and support Australia's commitment to a sustainable ocean. In this role you will: Work in a team to implement the Marine Resources Initiative project to assist Southeast Asian countries manage their marine resources in line with the team, ORCA and GA's goals and objectives Support engagement with officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's Southeast Asia Branch, Australian Government embassies, officials from the MRI partner States, and service providers, exercising judgement and professionalism to build productive working relationships. Support and coordinate meetings including preparing agendas and supporting materials, recording meeting minutes, outcomes and decisions. Contribute to the improvement of project management processes that support key business outcomes and perform administrative tasks as necessary to support the work of the team. Use initiative and experience to analyse, plan, review and adjust priorities and work activities to deliver outcomes with a high degree of flexibility. Communicate effectively, both written and spoken and contribute to the provision of professional advice on sensitive matters. Represent the Australian Government in a professional manner in regional and international forums. To be successful in the role you will have: Strong verbal and written communication skills, including being able to tailor to an audience with attention to detail to ensure consistency and accuracy of documentation. Excellent organisational skills, including time management and the ability to operate in a dynamic environment to meet changing and competing priorities.
