Position title: Senior Counsellor Department: MSI Counselling and Case Management Team Location: MSI Richmond Support Office Reports to: Manager - Psychosocial Health Duration: Permanent, Part Time Hours of work: 3 days per week (22.8 hours) The role: The Senior Counsellor is a key clinical leadership role within the Psychosocial Health team, supporting Counsellors, the Counselling Intake Officer and Case Managers in the Manager’s absence. This senior therapeutic position suits an experienced clinician skilled in supporting clients through pregnancy, the perinatal period, and related reproductive experiences. The role combines high-quality counselling with expert advice to stakeholders, contribution to research and advocacy, and strong knowledge in trauma-informed care, ethical practice, and child safeguarding. Key Responsibilities: Maintain a counselling caseload and provide trauma-informed, evidence-based support to clients with sexual and reproductive health concerns. Provide clinical input into decision-making by the Counselling Intake Officer regarding risk management and counselling appointment availability, as delegated by the Manager. Conduct clinical file audits and ensure compliance with organisational, legal, and professional standards. Engage in ongoing professional development, supervision, and maintain current knowledge of relevant legislation and counselling frameworks. Contribute to service development, identify gaps in delivery, and participate in advocacy, research, and stakeholder engagement activities. Provide clinical supervision to Counsellors, Case Managers, and the Counselling Intake Officer in the Manager’s absence, and support student placements. Skills and Qualifications: Essential Pro-choice and person-centred practice Strong knowledge of trauma informed care principles Well-developed understanding of issues experienced by pregnant women and people including child safety and family violence, reproductive coercion and abuse, discrimination and the necessary organisational/professional responses. Experience with diverse and/or under serviced client groups such as LGBTQIA, older persons, First Nations’ peoples, young people, people living with a disability. 3 years full-time equivalent experience is required, counselling clients in a therapeutic setting. Minimum undergraduate degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling or Youth Work Membership or eligible for/or registration (where mandated) with relevant bodies or e.g. AASW PACFA, ACA, AAFT Training in clinical supervision Able to work autonomously and as part of a team.
