Company Overview We are looking for a forward-thinking AI and Privacy Legal Counsel to support a global money-manager. Our innovative client takes retail and institutional investors' data and privacy seriously, hence the expansion to their high calibre in-house legal team. Role Overview This is a newly created position on a long-term contract, with a view to permanency in the future. This is an opportunity to shape their Australian AI Legal function, working closely with global counterparts, the Chief Privacy Officer, the General Counsel's team, as well as the data and analytics division. You will advise on the legal and regulatory considerations of developing and deploying AI technologies, working closely with cross-functional teams to ensure innovations meet legal, ethical, and business standards. This is a high-impact role for a lawyer who is comfortable navigating complex legal frameworks while enabling responsible AI development. Key Responsibilities Advise on legal matters related to AI, including data use, intellectual property, algorithmic transparency, liability, and regulatory compliance Draft and negotiate technology and commercial contracts, including AI licensing, partnerships, and 3rd party data-sharing agreements Stay current with global Privacy regulations and translate legal requirements into clear operational guidance Leads the global privacy incident control and response framework. Supports breach operations and regulatory interactions Partner with product and engineering teams to assess legal risks in AI models, systems, and applications Contribute to internal frameworks for responsible AI, including governance, transparency, and bias mitigation Skills and Experience Admitted to practice as a lawyer in Australia 8 years’ post-admission experience, with specifically 5yrs years of work with technology, privacy, machine learning, or data-driven legal practice Prior technology driven in-house legal experience is essential from a highly regulated environment, such as financial services or e-commerce Deep understanding of privacy, data protection, and cutting-edge tech law Ability to communicate complex legal concepts clearly to technical and non-technical audiences. Team player with high emotional intelligence Experience working on multiple projects at once in a fast-paced environment Full Australian working rights are essential, no sponsorship on offer. 3 days per week in the Melbourne CBD is non-negotiable, no remote working interstate.
