The Field Measurement and Standardisation Team (part of the Standards and Metrology Laboratories)) Calibration and Science Officers are responsible for the calibration, acceptance testing and maintenance of a wide variety of electronic and mechanical meteorological instrumentation. Within FMS there is a specific focus on the end-to-end quality of measurements in the field including the research into the appropriateness of technology, calibration, data acquisition, physical sensor interfaces to the environment and siting of equipment. The Calibration and Science Officers will assess new surface meteorological and hydrological instrumentation for use in the Australian network, provide technical advice and support other technical and scientific staff across the Bureau. They will be required to design laboratory and Field experiments as well as calibration and test systems, develop, operate and maintain calibration systems, use workflow and asset management database systems, technical diagrams and documentation, and procedures. These rolls will be focused on data analysis projects supporting the characterisation of instruments as they perform in the field and maintenance/operation of the associate databases. The work is focused on understanding the factors that influence the quality, reliability and integrity of the observations the Bureau take in the field. They will have a high level of oral and written communication skills and be able to work as part of a small team, or independently, depending on the circumstances. The Officers will participate in ensuring the quality and effectiveness of products and services and the ongoing development, implementation, and continual improvement of the quality management system to achieve and maintain the ongoing certification of compliance with the ISO 9001 and ISO 17025 quality management Standards. The successful candidate will help grow the world-class standards and metrology quality assurance capability and be focused on customer delivery. The Standards and Metrology Laboratories Calibration and Science Officers will report directly to Principal Metrologist &Field Measurement and Standardisation, EL2L. The key duties of the position include The responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to: 1. Develop, coordinate and undertake calibration, testing and maintenance of laboratory and field equipment. 2. Liaise with the Principal Metrologist, Standards & Metrology Laboratory Manager, Project Managers, other Calibration Officers and other Inventory Officers to schedule equipment calibrations to align with rollout schedules and optimise utilisation of laboratory capacity. 3. Conduct data analysis, investigations, evaluations, metrology research, system development and/or evaluation and make recommendations in support of proposed changes to: • Observations systems, processes and issues, • Evaluate the impacts of siting on existing observation quality. • Siting of new instruments. • Calibration systems. 4. Document processes, results and studies in the form of procedures, technical reports and work instructions. 5. Design, code, test and document computer programs and databases in support of scientific and operational activities. 6. Participate in ensuring the quality and effectiveness of products and services and the ongoing development, implementation and continual improvement of the quality management system to achieve and maintain the ongoing certification of compliance with the ISO 9001 and ISO17025 quality management standards. 7.
