Who we are The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is part of the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. As primary agency for Australia's Antarctic Program (AAP), the AAD is responsible for achieving the Australian Government's Antarctic goals. These goals are to: -maintain the Antarctic Treaty System and enhance Australia's influence within it -protect the Antarctic environment -understand the role of Antarctica in the global climate system -undertake scientific work of practical, economic and national significance. The AAD also has responsibility for administering the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands. The Operations and Logistics Branch oversees our operations in Antarctica - supporting people in our year-round research stations and remote field bases. The branch oversees air and sea transport (and the contracts to manage Australia's icebreaker, the RSV Nuyina and Aviation capabilities) to transport expeditioners south and enable them to travel around Antarctica. We have staff with diverse skills, located primarily in Tasmania, in Antarctica and on Macquarie Island. The AAD's Maritime Asset Management and Maritime Logistics sections jointly facilitate and administer the full scope of maritime activities for the AAD each season, encompassing: The provision of all shipping and watercraft capabilities for operations in the Antarctic, sub-Antarctic and the Southern Ocean. The planning, management and execution of voyages to deliver program outcomes as defined in each seasonal plan. The recruitment, training and deployment of specialist voyage management and watercraft operation personnel. The execution of responsibilities as 'vessel owner' for the RSV Nuyina on behalf of the Commonwealth of Australia, including through joint management with Serco Defence as the contracted Ship Manager. Coordinate all vessel operation and lifecycle maintenance activities for the RSV Nuyina. The key duties of the position include The Assistant Director - RSV Capability Management reports to the Director, Maritime Asset Management and works closely with the Ship Manager to ensure the ongoing delivery of ship's capability. The successful applicant will be expected to apply their well-developed knowledge and expertise to: Plan and manage capability requirements, ensure the ongoing suitability of functional performance specifications through-life and ensure the future readiness and effective integration across the vessel. Identify capability gaps and risks, and recommend timely, cost-effective solutions. Develop, implement, monitor and review the RSV Nuyina Capability Management Plan. Coordinate the delivery of capability across all fundamental inputs (organisation, management, personnel, collective training, systems, facilities and training, supplies, support and industry) Ensure the interoperability of RSV Nuyina's capability across technical, procedural and human elements. Implement and manage capability governance to ensure transparent, effective and budget-compliant decision-making. Coordinate in-service management of RSV Nuyina including sustainment, obsolescence management, operational readiness and technology refresh activities or upgrades to maintain capability. Align cross-functional priorities and overall material delivery. Develop, enhance and coordinate governance practices across key internal and external stakeholders to ensure the shared objectives of capability maintenance and enhancement, reliability and safety are efficiently and effectively achieved. Provide leadership and coordination in the development of internal capability to enhance business continuity and professional development. Monitor, forecast and produce complex budgets in alignment with Commonwealth financial management guidelines and contractual obligations. Review and monitor daily voyage reporting from the ship's manager and from the ship's staff on conclusion of each voyage and season. Provide advice, briefings and reports to the Director, Maritime Asset Management in relation to ship availability and performance and capability management. As required, provide technical subject matter expertise in support of charter arrangements for commercial vessels. Desirable qualifications Tertiary qualification from an Australian university (or an equivalent overseas institution) in Capability Management, Engineering, Project Management or demonstrable equivalent experience. 5 years' experience working within a management role ideally within the defence or marine industry.
