Your New Role: The Development Compliance Officer is a key position within the Development and Compliance Department of Council, responsible for the delivery of high-quality compliance regulation of local development activities across the Shire to ensure safety, legal and environmental requirements are met. This position delivers a broad range of compliance functions through a balanced approach that combines enforcement, education, and community engagement. The role ensures resources are directed effectively, focusing on achieving voluntary compliance through proactive education and early intervention, with formal enforcement measures applied where appropriate. As a primary point of contact between Council and the community, developers, and industry representatives, the Development Compliance Officer provides expert advice and practical guidance to enhance community understanding of planning and building requirements. About You: To be successful in this position, you will possess tertiary qualifications in Planning, Building Surveying, Fire Safety or related discipline, and/or extensive experience in the investigation and resolution of compliance matters relating to planning, building, or fire safety; demonstrated ability to apply and interpret provisions of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979, Local Government Act 1993, Building Code of Australia and other relevant legislation; demonstrated knowledge of the development and construction process and an ability to identify non-compliance with development related activities; and demonstrated experience in appropriate collection and preparation of evidence for enforcement, legal proceedings and court attendance. The successful candidate will also have the ability to effectively deal with difficult situations, resolving issues with tact and diplomacy and presenting Council in a positive image; strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills with the ability to manage difficult conversations professionally; and strongly developed written and oral communication skills, including demonstrated ability to prepare clear and comprehensive reports and correspondence on development and building compliance matters.
