Job Description The General Practitioner plays a vital role in leading and managing the delivery of primary healthcare services to immigration detainees within detention centres. This position demands a strong foundation in general practice and primary healthcare, along with specialised knowledge of the unique health needs within the detention environment—particularly in areas such as mental health and substance use. A key responsibility of the role is to provide clinical supervision and serve as the primary escalation point for health staff working within the immigration detention centre. This is a full-time, virtual position. Join us in bringing a new approach to medical and wellbeing care for detainees by: Providing preventative health checks, immunisations, and health promotion. Managing acute presentations. Managing chronic diseases and attending to day-to-day medical concerns. Supporting patients with acute and chronic mental health issues alongside our specialised mental health team. Adapting to the changing needs of the immigration field, ensuring flexibility in your approach to care. Let’s talk about you: To be considered for this role, you must hold a medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) and have full registration with the Medical Board of Australia, without restrictions. Fellowship with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP), the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM), or equivalent substantial clinical practice experience is essential. Experience in telehealth is highly desirable, along with demonstrated capability in managing mental health and alcohol or other drug concerns. Authorisation as an opioid substitution treatment prescriber is preferred, or a willingness to obtain authorisation in your jurisdiction. You should also have knowledge and experience in managing public health issues, particularly communicable diseases, and a strong understanding of the needs of vulnerable populations. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential, as is the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team. You must demonstrate a clear understanding of ethical considerations and confidentiality in healthcare delivery and be able to navigate and adapt to a complex and challenging healthcare environment.
