About the Opportunity Our client, a leading global energy trading and investment firm, requires a Quantitative Analyst to develop and implement quantitative models and analytical tools for wholesale energy trading operations. This role offers the opportunity to apply advanced mathematical and statistical techniques to energy market analysis, trading strategy, and risk management. The Role As Quantitative Analyst - Wholesale Energy Markets, you will develop quantitative models, conduct advanced statistical analysis, and build analytical tools to support energy trading, portfolio optimisation, and risk management. You'll work closely with traders, risk managers, and commercial teams to deliver quantitative insights that drive trading performance and risk-adjusted returns. Key Responsibilities Develop and implement quantitative models for electricity and gas price forecasting, valuation, and trading strategy optimisation Build statistical models and machine learning algorithms to analyse market behaviour, identify trading opportunities, and forecast market outcomes Conduct quantitative analysis of National Electricity Market dynamics including dispatch, pricing, and generation behaviour Design and implement portfolio optimisation models for energy trading positions, hedging strategies, and risk management Develop valuation models for energy derivatives, structured products, and physical assets including generation and storage Build automated trading tools, pricing systems, and analytical platforms using Python, R, or other programming languages Conduct backtesting, scenario analysis, and sensitivity testing of trading strategies and risk models Analyse fundamental market drivers including demand patterns, generator availability, network constraints, and weather impacts Develop risk metrics, VaR models, and stress testing frameworks for energy trading portfolios Create data pipelines and analytical infrastructure to process market data, trading data, and operational data at scale Collaborate with traders to translate market insights and quantitative analysis into actionable trading strategies Monitor model performance, validate assumptions, and refine methodologies based on market outcomes Research emerging quantitative techniques, market microstructure, and trading technologies relevant to energy markets Prepare analytical reports, trading recommendations, and risk assessments for trading teams and senior management Support regulatory reporting, compliance monitoring, and risk governance requirements Maintain and enhance quantitative libraries, codebases, and analytical tools Your Background and Experience We are seeking candidates with strong quantitative capabilities and energy market knowledge: Minimum 3-5 years of experience in quantitative analysis, trading analytics, or quantitative research within energy markets or commodities Advanced degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Econometrics, or related quantitative field; Master's or PhD highly regarded Strong programming skills in Python, R, MATLAB, or similar languages for quantitative analysis and model development Experience with statistical modelling, time series analysis, machine learning, or optimisation techniques Knowledge of wholesale electricity markets, National Electricity Market operations, or energy trading Understanding of energy derivatives, options pricing, risk management, or portfolio optimisation Proficiency with data analysis tools, databases (SQL), and data visualisation platforms Experience with electricity price forecasting, fundamental modelling, or market simulation advantageous Strong mathematical and analytical skills with ability to solve complex quantitative problems Excellent programming practices including version control, testing, and documentation Ability to communicate complex quantitative concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders Understanding of trading systems, market data feeds, and real-time analytics desirable Knowledge of renewable energy, battery storage, or distributed energy resources advantageous Experience in quantitative finance, algorithmic trading, or risk modelling highly regarded Remuneration and Benefits Competitive Base Salary – $130,000 - $180,000 plus superannuation and performance bonus Performance Incentives – Significant bonus potential aligned with trading performance and individual contribution Professional Development – Access to training, conferences, and continuous learning in quantitative methods and energy markets Technology & Tools – Work with cutting-edge analytical tools, trading systems, and computational infrastructure Collaborative Environment – Work alongside experienced traders, analysts, and quants in a dynamic trading environment Career Progression – Clear pathways into senior quantitative roles, trading positions, or risk management leadership Flexible Working – Hybrid arrangements with work-from-home flexibility Leave Entitlements – Four weeks annual leave plus personal and compassionate leave Health & Wellbeing – Corporate health insurance options and employee assistance programme How to Apply Submit your resume, cover letter, and examples of relevant quantitative work, models, or analytical projects demonstrating your technical capabilities.
