About the Opportunity Our client, one of Australia's largest energy retailers, requires a Regulatory Advisor to provide expert guidance on retail energy regulatory compliance and policy matters. This role offers the opportunity to work on critical regulatory initiatives during a period of significant market reform and enhanced customer protections. The Role As Regulatory Advisor - Retail Energy, you will provide specialist advice on retail energy regulations, compliance frameworks, and regulatory risk management. Working closely with commercial, legal, operations, and customer service teams, you'll ensure the business maintains compliance with evolving regulatory obligations whilst supporting strategic objectives in a competitive retail energy market. Key Responsibilities Provide expert advice on retail energy regulatory frameworks including National Energy Retail Law, National Energy Retail Rules, and jurisdictional energy laws Monitor and interpret regulatory developments, policy changes, and rule amendments affecting retail energy operations and customer-facing activities Support compliance with Australian Energy Regulator requirements, Essential Services Commission obligations, and state-based retail energy regulations Prepare regulatory submissions, consultation responses, and briefings for senior management on retail energy policy matters and rule changes Conduct regulatory risk assessments across retail operations, identifying compliance gaps and developing remediation strategies Support customer protections compliance including hardship programmes, life support obligations, payment plans, and complaint handling frameworks Collaborate with customer service, billing, credit management, and operations teams to embed regulatory requirements into business processes Assist with regulatory reporting obligations and compliance monitoring across retail energy licence conditions Provide guidance on marketing and sales compliance including pricing disclosure, contract terms, and informed consent requirements Support regulatory audits, compliance reviews, and investigations from regulators and ombudsman schemes Maintain compliance frameworks, policies, procedures, and guidance materials aligned with current regulatory standards Deliver training and advice to business units on retail energy regulatory obligations and customer protections requirements Lead or contribute to compliance projects including system implementations, process improvements, and regulatory change management Engage with industry bodies, regulatory forums, and stakeholder consultations on retail energy policy development Monitor emerging regulatory issues including consumer data rights, digital innovation, and distributed energy integration Support incident management and breach notifications, including root cause analysis and remediation planning Your Background and Experience We are seeking candidates with demonstrated regulatory expertise in Australian retail energy markets: Minimum 4-6 years of regulatory or compliance experience within Australian retail energy or utilities sectors Strong knowledge of National Energy Retail Law, National Energy Retail Rules, and jurisdictional retail energy frameworks Understanding of Australian Energy Regulator and Essential Services Commission regulatory approaches, compliance expectations, and enforcement practices Experience with customer protections regulations, hardship frameworks, energy consumer safeguards, and ombudsman processes Proven ability to interpret complex regulations and provide practical, commercial advice to business stakeholders Experience preparing regulatory submissions, compliance reports, consultation responses, or regulatory inquiries Bachelor's degree in Law, Economics, Business, or related field;
