The Company The Yirrkala Community Store employs up to 10 people and provides groceries, clothing, fresh produce, general hardware and fuel supported by a popular takeaway kitchen. Yirrkala is a small community in East Arnhem Region, Northern Territory, 18 kilometres southeast of the mining town of Nhulunbuy, on the Gove Peninsula in Arnhem Land. Rich in history, art and culture, Yirrkala is home to the Yolgnu people and is well known for its Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Arts Centre, positioned opposite the store attracting a wide variety of tourists and community members to the area. The Roles We are looking for an experienced store managers couple who will add value to our already thriving community store. The store managers will oversee daily operations at the store and ensure it runs smoothly and effectively. As store managers, you will be responsible for motivating the team, developing business strategies, and upholding the operational and organisational standards of the store. Additionally, the store managers will train new staff and take on other administrative tasks as needed, such as monitoring inventory levels. Key Responsibilities Oversee day-to-day store operations and resources. Lead, coach, train, and manage staff to drive engagement and performance. Manage HR functions, including rosters, timesheets, leave, and performance reviews. Monitor inventory, stock orders, and gross profit margins. Develop and implement strategies to achieve sales and profit targets. Build and maintain supplier relationships, ensuring value, quality, and cost-effectiveness. Ensure high-quality customer service and maintain store presentation standards. Manage accounts, invoicing, operating expenses, and ATM reconciliations. Review and update policies, processes, and procedures to improve efficiency. Liaise with company directors and stakeholders on store operations and projects. Coordinate building maintenance and other physical resources. Provide strategic advice and support to leadership on store and community initiatives. Set a strong professional example for managers and staff. Essential Skills Experience managing a retail store. Strong retail, POS software, and back-office systems experience. Proficiency in MS Office. Knowledge of remote store Code of Practice. Proven leadership, decision-making, and motivational skills. Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication. Excellent problem-solving and ability to perform under pressure. Understanding of Workplace Health & Safety principles. Ability to live and work in a remote community with cultural respect. Valid Australian driver’s licence. Desirable Skills Strong industry relationships. Understanding of Indigenous culture and customs. Forklift licence. The Rewards Working in a beautiful location each position receives a full-time annual rate superannuation 6 weeks annual leave. Additionally, a fully furnished 2 x 1 low maintenance home is included at a heavily subsidized rate, excluding electricity costs. The home is located in town close to shops, schools and facilities. A vehicle is also provided for company and some private use. Note: Pets are not allowed. On completion of the probationary period, agreed relocation expenses will be reimbursed.
