The key duties of the position include About the role The Technology branch supports the National Archives in meeting its vision and reaching its strategic goals through services, technology, infrastructure, software, security and governance of its information assets to secure and protect against cyber security threats. The Applications Integration section is responsible for the development, integration and support of the National Archives collection management and digital presence applications. We work closely with business areas and I&T sections to deliver products and services. The Assistant Director, Applications Development plays a strategic and technical leadership role in modernising the National Archives' application ecosystem. As part of the Applications Integration Section, this position leads the development of secure, scalable, and interoperable systems that support digital preservation and citizen access. The role drives innovation through cloud-native architectures, DevOps practices, and reusable integration patterns, contributing directly to the agency's transformation goals under the Strategy 2025-2030. The Assistant Director fosters a collaborative team culture, mentors' developers, and ensures alignment between technical solutions and business needs. Under broad direction the main duties of the role are to: Lead design and development of modern & legacy .NET applications using .NET Core and .NET 4. Implement secure integration solutions using APIs, middleware, and cloud services. Champion the modernization of legacy systems through innovative design and automation. Guide the adoption of DevOps practices including CI/CD pipelines and Git strategies. Ensure application reliability, performance, and maintainability through proactive monitoring and testing. Prepare and maintain technical documentation, SOPs, and development standards. Mentor and support junior developers, fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and continuous improvement. Collaborate with business areas to translate technical capabilities into strategic outcomes. Support full stack development using modern frameworks (e.g., React, Angular, Vue.js). Promote compliance with Essential 8 and PSPF security standards across all development activities. Contribute to the development of a Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) framework. Engage in cross-functional planning and provide technical leadership for EPMO-registered projects. Apply the principles of APS Values, Code of Conduct, workplace diversity principles, work health and safety and participative management within a work and team environment. Promote and apply the National Archives' Vision, Mission and Commitments as expressed in Strategy 2025-2030: Evolving National Archives and Our Values. Qualifications or demonstrated high level technical application development and knowledge of the following areas would be desirable: Programming and frameworks such as - .NET Core, ASP .Net MVC, C#, JavaScript, Node.js; Integration of Web services, Search, APIs, cloud services and/or COTS software; Database integrations (SQL, PostgreSQL); Source control tools (DevOps, TFS and code repositories); Tertiary qualifications in Computer Science, or equivalent field.
