Our client is an important government department who contribute significantly to the health and wellbeing of the nation. This organisation is a well-regarded Commonwealth Department and focus largely on key social and ceremonial policy issues. The Opportunity This opportunity is being offered initially as a 12-month non-ongoing contract where there is strong opportunity for permanent appointment down the track. You will be responsible for leading your team and owning the internal budgeting and reporting functions for this big department. The Role Key responsibilities include: Develop, maintain and deliver timely, high quality and accurate end-of-month reports for consideration by the Executive Board to aid decision-making Work with other team members in understanding the internal budget allocations and existing system derived reporting templates to produce insightful end-of-month reports Build relationships with, and work with the finance business partners to understand the business of their divisions to provide meaningful analysis on their end-of-month results at a whole-of-Department level Review current processes and outputs used for end-of-month reporting to suggest and implement improvements with the support of the Director and the CFO Provide strategic advice to the CFO, Division and the Executive on a variety of financial and business issues Participate in and provide input on the roll-out of the replacement of our existing financial management information system, particularly in respect of management reporting deliverables Provide input on mid-year and the annual internal budget setting process Represent the branch or department or both at internal and external meetings and forums Prepare a range of other written material including various reports, ministerial and department briefs The Ideal Person Our ideal candidate will likely come from one of two backgrounds. You may be a very experienced EL1 Management Accountant, Internal Budget Officer or Finance Business Partner with strong technical accounting skills and relevant tertiary qualifications. Alternatively, you might have a consulting background, working at the Manager level or above in a Big 4 or similar consulting firm, with experience in Federal Government engagements related to internal budget or management accounting. It is essential to demonstrate a proactive approach, effective communication skills, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to influence others to resolve accounting challenges effectively. To be eligible for this role, you must be an Australian citizen and hold a Baseline security clearance.
