Job Description The General Practitioner plays a vital role in leading and managing the delivery of primary healthcare services to immigration detainees within detention centres. This position demands a strong foundation in general practice and primary healthcare, along with specialised knowledge of the unique health needs within the detention environment—particularly in areas such as mental health and substance use. A key responsibility of the role is to provide clinical supervision and serve as the primary escalation point for health staff working within the immigration detention centre. This is a permanent part-time, on-site position (3 days per week – Wednesday to Friday), with the potential for a hybrid work arrangement in the future. Join us in bringing a new approach to medical and wellbeing care for detainees by: Providing preventative health checks, immunisations, and health promotion. Managing acute presentations. Managing chronic diseases and attending to day-to-day medical concerns. Supporting patients with acute and chronic mental health issues alongside our specialised mental health team. Adapting to the changing needs of the immigration field, ensuring flexibility in your approach to care. Let’s talk about you: We’re seeking a healthcare professional with a strong understanding of public health issues, particularly those impacting vulnerable populations. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential, along with the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team. A sound understanding of ethical considerations and confidentiality in healthcare delivery is also critical. This role requires someone who can confidently navigate and adapt to a complex and often challenging healthcare environment, demonstrating resilience and a commitment to high-quality care. You will have a medical degree (MBBS or equivalent), full registration with the Medical Board (without restrictions) and Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) or equivalent.
