It means merchants who use their payment systems with need to make changes to facilitate integration, connects to the APIs etc This role is focused on connecting with the merchants, talking through the changes, and explaining what they need to do technically to ensure the transition between systems goes smoothly. You need to be able to talk technically to developers, but equally feel at home talking to non technical people. As such, it's key that you know & understand the payments sector - payment gateways, cards, transaction acquisition, etc. You also need to understand technology - APIs, scripting, coding, etc. You don't to cut code in the role, but it would be great if you knew the space.
