This is a rare opportunity to take on a pivotal leadership role in one of Queensland’s most unique and diverse local government environments. Based in Normanton/Karumba, you’ll be part of a team that delivers essential services across 65,000 square kilometres of stunning Gulf country. This is more than a desk job – you’ll be out in the field, visiting worksites and camps, ensuring Council’s operations are safe, compliant, and underpinned by a strong WH&S culture. About the Role Reporting to the Manager Human Resources, you’ll oversee Council’s WH&S systems, audits and compliance, while also mentoring staff to make safety second nature in their daily work. You’ll collaborate with leaders and frontline teams, ensuring WH&S is not just a requirement, but part of the culture. This role is hands-on, highly visible across the organisation, and offers you the chance to directly impact the safety and wellbeing of Council’s workforce and community. Key Responsibilities Lead Council’s WH&S compliance and embed a proactive safety culture across all operations. Be present across worksites and camps, running audits and ensuring best practice is in place. Manage investigations, hazard identification, and reporting to leadership and authorities. Coordinate WH&S training, building staff knowledge and commitment to safe practices. Mentor and develop the WH&S Officer to deliver strong ‘on the ground’ outcomes. Lead the WH&S Committee and drive active participation across the organisation. Manage hazardous chemical compliance, workers’ compensation, and return-to-work programs. About you You will have: A Diploma or higher in Workplace Health & Safety. A strong background in local government, construction, or mining is desired. Proven ability to train, mentor and inspire staff to live and breathe WH&S daily. Experience in audits, investigations and working with relevant authorities. Strong administrative and reporting skills, with digital WH&S system knowledge. Confidence working in remote/regional areas and a current driver’s license. Desirable: Certificate IV in Training & Assessment, plant/machinery accreditation, and previous local government or remote community experience.
