An opportunity exists for a Business Unit Manager to join our team and manage our laboratory and on-site mine services. Based in Gladstone, you will be involved in all facets of the business and will be responsible for the overall running of the laboratory and mine site services on a day- to- day basis. It is expected the Business Unit Manager will be able to operate within budget and meet the expectations of Clients and Management as a whole. The Role Reporting to the Superintending Manager, the key responsibilities include but are not limited to: Supervise and coordinate all laboratory activities. Liaise with internal teams (Management, Finance, Sales) and external Clients and Customers. Develop and maintain strong client relationships. Ensure accuracy and integrity of analytical data. Maintain compliance with quality standards (ISO 17025, NATA). Oversee calibration, maintenance, and test methods. Implement and monitor quality procedures and continuous improvement. Conduct audits and manage inter-laboratory testing programs. Prepare proposals, quotations, and final reports. Manage reporting deadlines and stock control. Authorise overtime and monitor staff productivity. Induct and train new staff in procedures and safety. Ensure staff adhere to position responsibilities. Delegate tasks to maintain operational standards. Ensure safe operation of technologies and procedures. Collaborate with HSE officers to maintain safety standards. Promote a strong safety and sustainability culture. Comply with state OHS legislation. The essentials Tertiary qualification in Science/Chemistry or equivalent would be preferred 5 years’ industry experience in Coal analysis would be seen as an advantage Demonstrated laboratory and staff supervision experience Understanding of basic business principles An understanding of financial reporting A strong customer focus The ability to manage change in a dynamic working environment Strong leadership skills and attributes Negotiation, influencing and conflict resolution skills Excellent communication skills, both written and oral Ability to work under pressure and to strict deadlines Strong quality service attitude and approach Working at ALS The ALS team is a diverse and dedicated community united by our passion to make a difference in the world.
