About our team The Australian Border Force (ABF) is an operationally independent body under the Department of Home Affairs portfolio. The ABF is responsible for operational activity that supports the Australian Government's border protection, investigations, compliance, detention and enforcement functions. Within the ABF, the Civil Maritime Sustainment Branch (CMSB) is responsible for the capability management of a fleet of air and maritime surveillance, patrol and response assets. Our capabilities include ocean going patrol boats, shallow water and coastal response vessels and contracted aircraft. CMSB also provides command, operational and logistical support, in support of the ABF operational objectives. CMSB operates in a complex, challenging and changing environment that is characterised by a continual high tempo of civil maritime operations. Within CMSB the Large Hull and Small Vessel (LHSV) In-Service Support (ISS) Section is responsible for the provision of maintenance and support arrangements delivered through sustainment contracts for four large hull vessels (Ocean Shield, Thaiyak, two Bay Class vessels) and 33 small vessels. This includes ensuring that planned and emergent maintenance activities are completed to budgetary and operational requirements and in accordance with the overarching technical and regulatory framework. Please visit our website for more information about the Department of Home Affairs or Australian Border Force Our ideal candidate The Small Vessel Fleet Assistant Ship Manager contributes to the safe, efficient and economic performance of the ABF small vessel fleet, through effective and best practice management of all aspects of vessel maintenance and support within relevant regulatory frameworks. This requires excellent maritime technical knowledge and experience, as well as a proven ability to achieve results in support of operational activities. We are looking for someone with maritime technical experience and familiar with small vessel or related industry experience. The successful candidate will work as part of team to deliver these objectives. The key duties of the position include Duties and responsibilities The responsibilities of the Small Vessel Fleet Assistant Ship Manager will include: Ensuring ABF small vessels meet all regulatory requirements, including survey, audit requirements and statutory certification in accordance with navigation acts, marine orders and class societies; Scheduling and overseeing planned and corrective maintenance for the small vessel fleet; Provision of technical and operational support and guidance to the small vessel crew and operational commands; Consultation with manufacturers for specialist advice and guidance where required; Monitor vessel survey works to ensure vessel is returned to operational state in a timely manner; Supporting maintenance assurance on the activities arranged or performed by the contracted maintenance provider Communicate with stakeholders impartially and professionally, providing accurate information, flexible advice and problem solving for complex maintenance and contract management matters; Supporting effective risk management in accordance with the appropriate risk management plan and the departments risk management framework; Reviewing the Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and facilitating required works, and related invoicing for services; Review Objective Quality Evidence (OQE) and configuration change proposal documentation and liaising with ABF Fleet Engineering to progress proposal. Additional information Skills/ Experience Mandatory: Strong communication skills including the ability to establish and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Strong representational skills, to ensure both the Department and the contractor achieves all stated aims and outcomes. Willingness to undertake training and/or relevant qualifications. Desirable: Minimum 3 years' experience in a technical related role, maritime technical position, or equivalent. Current knowledge or demonstrated ability to quickly develop an understanding of the technical operations of vessels, maritime safety regulations and operating systems of the littoral vessels.
